3 week Rajasthan tour

"Incredible experience"
We did not have too much time to travel really on our own, so we got a tailor-made trip by a local agency, with a car, driver and hotel reservations, and it was excellent.
In case you are thinking of a road tour through Rajasthatn, you should try to contact these people. They are really serious, dedicated, and holding their promises. Their name is Soloindia (http://www.soloindia.net/), and they organized everything perfect for us. Our our driver was Ajay, a reliable, sensible and honest guy, and very good driver in those crazy roads indeed! Do not hesitate to contact me if you want further references.
In our itinerary we tried to see as much as possible without spending too much time on the road in a single day. Never more than 250 - 300 Km. This is what we did:
DAY / TRIP
1 Amsterdam-Delhi
2 Delhi
3 Delhi-Mandawa
4 Mandawa-Bikaner
5 Bikaner-Jaisalmer
6 Jaisalmer
7 Jaisalmer-Desierto del Thar
8 Jaisalmer-Jodhpur-Luni
9 Luni-Ranakpur
10 Ranakpur-Udaipur
11 Udaipur
12 Udaipur
13 Udaipur-Chittogarth
14 Chittogarth-Pushkar
15 Pushkar-Jaipur
16 Jaipur
17 Jaipur-Fatehpur Sikri-Agra
18 Agra
19 Agra-Delhi-Amsterdam
It was exhausting, of course, but that is travelling for those of us who only have a limited number of days per year. And there is time enough to rest at home afterwards... All in all was an unforgetable experience.
As for the accomodation, we avoided the most luxurious international chain hotels, and went mostly for medium size hotels run by locals and families, and also some palaces and fortresses. When I have time I will add some tips about every place. The advice from Soloindia was excellent in this regard. They know what they do, and in 12 hotels in diverse places they only made one mistake, the filthy Deedar-E-Taj in Agra (see Tourist Trap). Here is the list:
CITY / HOTEL
Delhi / Good Palace
Mandawa / Mandawa Castle
Bikaner / Harasar Haveli
Jaisalmer / Narain Niwas
Dessert / Mangalam Desert Resort
Luni Fort / Chanwa
Ranakpur / Shivika Lake
Udaipur / Ram Partap
Chittogarh / Partap Palace
Pushkar / Pushkar Palace
Jaipur / Shahpura House
Agra / Deedar-E-Taj

I recommend the Madhuban, located in a nice neighborhood, spotlessly clean, with an excellent restaurant:

The Golden Triangle a special tour
by ChrisChant
My daughter will be visiting Delhi for about a week or so in August 2005. I am looking for a tour of Delhi Agra and Jaipur maybe Jaisalmer if possible. It will be the end of an amazing 8month round the world tour she has been conducting on her own. The Palace on Wheels tour looks great but I'm afraid at 200-300 pounds per night it is too expensive. However I do want it to be a special end to a trip that has been done on a tight budget so I'm willing to splash out a bit. Can anyone help please?

Dear Chris, best way to visit Golden Triangle is hiring a cab. I suggest you to hire a cab from Delhi. 1night in Agra & 2 nights in Jaipur would be best.
Another best way is to reserve morning train known as Shatabdi Express to Agra & complete rest trip by car. Agra Hotels - Five star : Taj View, Four star : Mansingh,Budget : Mayur Tourist. Hotels Jaipur : The Trident, KK days, Shahpura house.
Thanks

We just came back from a week in Rajasthan. Instead of doing the Golden Triangle thing as everyone advised, we explored Jaipur for 4 days and chilled in Neemrana Fort Palace for 3 days.
We had absolutely no regrets--you cannot rush through Rajasthan, let alone India. It was wildly romantic, exotic and picturesque. As for the Taj Mahal...it'll just have to wait.
But it is a good idea to get a good, reliable guide/driver. Ours was Mahavir Yadav (known to VTers as Rajasthanbycar) and he was key to the success of our vacation. Because he was squiring us around, we avoided those infamous rickshaw drivers and most (but not all) uber-entrepreneurial touts. He helped us plan our itinerary, because he knew the best times to visit and photograph the sights. His fees are very reasonable, too. We were so happy, we gave him a sizable tip.
If your daughter still wants to do Delhi-Agra-Jaipur thing, he does that , too.
We highly recommend the two hotels we stayed in. In Jaipur, that's Alsisar Haveli; ask for Room 1. (Rambagh Palace is fabulous but too rich for our blood.)
In Neemrana, of course, the Fort Palace. No need to splurge on the large suites; the smaller ones will do just fine. Keep in mind though, it's strictly for relaxing and doing introspective stuff. A good way to break the drive from Jaipur to Delhi.
Hope that helps.
Still glowing from India,
Cynthia
