Travel Tips for Jaipur

Carpet Workshop # 8

by grets

Last, but not least, is the process of tying the ends in to neat and tidy knots.

Not surprisingly, the process of making one single carpet, from start to finsih, takes several months and involves numerous workers.

Basic fruit stalls on the street

by georeiser about Fruits

You will find basic fruit stalls everywhere in Jaipur, and especially inside the Pink city. Many of the stalls are just tables stacked on soft drink crates. Cheap, cheap! Delicous orange or other tropical fruit Less than 5 rupies

Amber Fort (I)

by Nprawira

Situated on the outskirts of Jaipur, Amber Fort served as the capital of ancient Jaipur state until 1727. The fort is perched up on a hill and there are 2 options to go up there. The first is the more direct one, which is a 5 minute ride in a jeep costing Rs 120 return. The second is a more popular option, which is on the back of an elephant for Rs 400 return. Since the death of several tourists, killed by an elephant ran amok, the authoriy has tried to limit the number of passengers on each elephant and the number of rides it can carry. So the queue tends to be longer now, which can be a 1/2 hour wait on a busy day, or you can find that there would be no more rides once you get to the front of the line.

Jantar Mantar, The Observatory

by Waxbag

Equally interesting in the City Palace on a grand scale is the Jantar Mantar, Jai Singh?s observatory. He invited scholars from all over the word to learn the latest technology on astronomy. He built five observatories including the Jantar Mantar. There are 13 different instruments for calculating movement of celestial bodies including the positions of the stars, altitude and azimuth, eclipses, and the time of day. The most impressive structure is the 27m high Brihat Samrat Yantra sundial. It is an enormous sundial that casts a shadow along a huge marble arc. The shadow moves 4m/hour along the arc cast from the gnomon arm set at 27 degrees. Jai Singh thought that the larger the instrument the more precise its measurements. This sundial measures local time as well as meridian pass time and declination. The collection takes up a large courtyard and resembles an art d?cor museum instead of a place of science.
