Camping - Royal Style

On arriving at Rajvilas, a horse and carriage carried us through the extensive and beautifully landscaped gardens to our "room", a luxurious tent in its own private garden. The horse and carriage is the accepted mode of transport throughout the resort by day, and golf carts take over at night.

The tent was sumptuously furnished and had the floor area of a small house. The roof was exquisitely embroidered in gold thread and the bed was large and comfortable.

The bathrooms are fitted to a very high standard, to include a big old-fashioned tub standing on clawed feet, a seperate shower that would comfortable accomodate four people, plus his and hers sinks!! Pretty blue glass bottles contained luxurious body lotions, oils, shampoos etc.

The garden of our tent housed two chaise longues plus a wooden garden table and chairs.

The tents are upgrade rooms, but from what I could see even the standard rooms are quite something, set as they are in clusters of four around fountains and trickling pools.

The swimming pool area is very well laid out, with ornamental elephants spouting jets of water into the pool. If you want to indulge in a delectable poolside snack, simply raise one of the little blue flags that are scattered at intervals beside the sunbeds. As I lazed I spotted kingfishers and peacocks - truly heavenly.

There is one restaurant at Rajvilas, but the menu is varied and extensive; to include a set menu which changes nightly. There is live entertainment nightly in part of the restaurant which is open to the stars and heated by firebrands and buckets of hot coals. Service is prompt, efficient and friendly.

At the end of our stay I was asked to complete a questionnaire on my experience of the hotel. I made one very slightly critical comment which the duty manager obviously read before we left. I was most impressed that she followed me to our car to ask for clarification on that point and suggestions of how they might improve.

Visit Rajvilas if you can afford it - it's really quite something.

Unique Quality: The grounds here are wonderful, and the idea of the luxury tent-rooms is very attractive.
