Hotel Umaid Mahal a Heritage Castle

Hotel Umaid Mahal is a original hotel with interior like a Heritage Castle. It's located in downtown Jaipur, 10 minutes drive from the "pink" part of the city. A large restaurant is located in the basement, but there are no guests there because all of them are sitting in the free air restaurtant on the top floor. Very nice view in the nights.

Unique Quality: The swimming pool is very tiny and not designed for swimming. There are not enough sunbeds, and the walls are shading the sun. Don't stay here for the swimmingpool.

Cheap Tat

so, when we looked at this hotel to stay in on our 2-night 3-day Jaipur visit, it looked really nice and good value for money. we even got a free pick up from the train station (to the hotel). the next thing we know, we pull up into a residential colony and are faced with a very tacky looking "PALACE" - what a farce, the website bigged this place up to be a heritage sight...for reference it is FAR FROM a heritage anything. Anyway, we checked in and everything was fine untill we got to the room .... it was the most sleazy looking room... there were coloured lights, tassles on the bedposts...if that's your kind of thing then this place is right for you! It's just our opinion that the hotel decor was cheap and tasteless. Fusion of old and new styles which didnt really fuse.
Also the food in the hotel is bad, except for the french fries/finger chips. they're pretty damn good.
For the price, i found that the tv, minibar, ac and service were all worth it. just don't expect any rajasthani style hospitality or class in this part of town.
OH ONE MORE THING
every night, two "PUPPETEERS" set up shop on the hotels entrance/drive way. this is a massive scam as they know people will be coming back from a days sightseeing and want to watch a real rajasthani puppet show and relax. they also claim it will take no more than 3 minutes... don't believe a word of it, the show is totally rubbish adn they wanted 400INR off us for it! I've been all over rajasthan and have been going there since i was little...trust me on this if nothing else..dont bother with those muppeteers!

Unique Quality: ummm....a swimming pool if you want to call it that!
there is also no gym.
internet @ 60rs/hour - sparodic connection
the staff are very nice and efficient, except the hotels kitchen staff...who are bone lazy. be sure to order before 10PM for either room service or food on the rooftop kitchen or else you will be left hungry.
Roof top view left a lot to be desired.

However the hotels only saving grace is its value for money. At 1800INR for a double room per night its not THAT bad...

“Very good hotel. Highly recommended

If you want to experience Jaipur at the time of the Raj but with completely modern conveniences, this is the place for you. From the moment we arrived at the hotel, we found ourselves in complete comfort. From the fabulously decorated rooms to the glorious marble bathrooms, the great help at the desk, the wonderful breakfast, we basked in the generous hospitality that India is known for. If you stay anywhere else in Jaipur, you will be missing a real treat

Unique Quality: The best part of this hotel is the roof top resturant, the pool and the decor.

Great hotel! Amazing upgrade

Great hotel for the price! The price is fair (any more, though, and it would quickly become excessive - this hotel will never be confused with the Oberoi). We got a large, clean, ** nicely decorated ++ ** room and good room service. The downside is that it's a bit far from the main action in Jaipur, but, well, transport is cheap, and this way you'll see the city a bit more. Small but functional business center is a plus. The owner could be a bit more professional, though - his staff is uniformly good, but he acts a bit too "buddy buddy" with his guests. This is not a big deal, but the front desk staff was noticably not as professional as the regular staff in the rest of the hotel. I highly recommend this hotel nevertheless

Unique Quality: Heritage castle style building with homely atmosphere and all 3 star facilities.

More about Umaid Mahal

Excellent Hotel!!!

by TripAdvisor Member ZSH2

I am from Boston, Massachusetts and this was my first time ever visiting India. I honestly could not have booked a better hotel!

While some of the reviews about the Umaid Mahal complain about the staff, I would like to say those reviews are absolute RUBBISH. They were courteous, respectful, and hardworking. These gentlemen (all of the workers are young men) work every single day from the early morning until late midnight, and will be willing to help you in any way they can if you treat them with RESPECT. Also, please remember to tip the staff 50 or 100 rupees (barely U.S.$2, 1 English Pound, or 1.3 Euro) after they serve your meal, clean your room, or do any favors for you. While I realize tipping is not common in many countries, it is TREMENDOUSLY appreciated by the staff at this hotel (and any hotel in India, for that matter). If you do this for the staff, they will make sure your stay at the Umaid Mahal will be excellent and assist you with absolutely anything you want. Honestly, for all of the difficult work they do at the Umaid Mahal, they truly deserve to be tipped.

With all that being said, I thought this hotel was a true gem among all the hotels in Jaipur. The rooms are a great size and the lighting and walls are decorated in true Rajasthani fashion.

The bed was big enough for two adults (I am a tall and heavy guy, and the bed was plenty spacious for both my wife and I) and had a comfortable matress. The bed sheets and towels are refreshed daily, and the linens were better than many American hotels I have stayed in.

The bathrooms are also beautifully designed, our restroom was in green marble and was immaculately cleaned every afternoon. The showers have POWERFUL water pressure and terrific temperature control (both of these traits are rare in many parts of India and should not be taken for granted).

If you want to go somewhere else besides the hotel restaurant, the staff will also be extremely willing to help you find great restaurants near the hotel. There are many restaurants nearby the hotel that will cater towards any palate, and you can get the staff to help you if you just want to order a pizza (we ordered from a local pizza place often and amazingly the pizza got to our hotel in less than 20 minutes even though the restaurant was a good distance away by car and traffic....I would highly recommend this place for Americans or Brits missing a good slice of pizza).

If you are in Jaipur, please go visit the MONKEY TEMPLE 15 minutes away from the hotel. You will see some stuff that is totally out of this world over there. Just imagine an entire village in the hills dominated by THOUSANDS of friendly, harmless monkeys that want nothing more than a banana or some peanuts. I was scared at first, but after only 15 minutes I was comfortable enough to be feeding them bananas and peanuts directly from my hand. Just hire a driver for 8 hours (usually only U.S. $10, 6 English Pounds, 8 Euro) and he will surely lead the way to this surreal, magical location.

Nice quiet Heritage Hotel

by TripAdvisor Member cm31

This hotel has lovely rooms that include antique furniture and balconies, as well a huge bathroom that was completely black marble. We actually originally booked into the Umaid Bhawan, run by the same family but due to a problem with our room, we were relocated to the Umaid Mahal. However, we were allowed to use the pool at the Umaid Bhawan which was one of our main requirements as we knew the weather would be warm.

The staff were a bit indifferent ( apart from the very friendly room cleaning man ) but if asked, would organise what you wanted. Being left alone by the staff in some ways was a welcome break from constantly being asked where you were going and whether you wanted a lift ( at a price of course ! ).

The location was in a quiet residential part of town which was about a 15 min drive into Jaipur but there were always autorickshaw drivers outside to take you where you wanted.

Iindian ambience

We stayed at the Umaid Mahal in Jaipur at the end of December, 2006. We were in India visiting our son who was living in Jaipur at the time. When we first arrived, we were a little unsure if it was going to work for us, as it is a very Indian hotel. We had been staying at more western style hotels and there were definitely differences. The bed was more like a futon, the room was very small with a balcony facing a busy, loud street. But, we stayed and were glad we did. The futon bed was very comfortable, there were large heavy curtains blocking out the street noise and sun in the morning, and the bathroom was the largest (particularly the shower which was a walk in room) I have ever seen in a hotel anywhere. The staff was very helpful (although be aware, they do not have hair dryers!) we had a few housekeeping issues that needed to be tended to, and they did so immediately. Room service is available (they were renovating their restaurant when we were there) and they are very quick, and the food was above average for room service (a very Indian menu though). The room was small but very nicely decorated with a Jaipur quilt on the bed and very clean. Our son hired a car and driver who took us anywhere in Jaipur we wanted to go, so the location wasn't an issue. It did not seem terribly far from the main city (and truthfully, a little off the beaten path is not bad in an Indian city!) If you want to feel like you're in India and not in a hotel room anywhere in the world, this is a good choice.

Unique Hotel

by TripAdvisor Member Chip0408

Really unique hotel with strong Rajasthan decorations throughout. The room is very clean and all marbled up. The shower can be a little bit stronger but good enough really! All the staff is friendly, polite and helpful. The owner is very chatty and funny. Excellent value for money!
