Funny sign!
by Willettsworld
Throughout India you'll come across some funny signs with great phrases or spelling mistakes on them. This one amused me as why should children only have beer and not adults or is it a case that the beer is made out of the local children?!! "English wine" is a phrase for whisky & gin - spirits in other words.
Chhatrel village people
by Willettsworld
After visiting the Parshvanath Temple at Lodurva, our driver took us to this little desert village called Chhatrel where he lived and where he was picking up his sister from and dropping her off at some wedding ceremony elsewhere. No sooner had we arrived, we were surrounded by children wanting sweets, pens or money. One lady took me to a shop where she showed me a large packet or sweets which I bought for the children. They were very happy afterwards! We also met several of the villages and were allowed to take photo's them including a couple of elderly guys who may have been the village elders. Our drivers sister was very ornately dressed with lots of piercings, bangles, chins and other jewellery. You could say that she was very "blinged up"! India's like their bling (wearing lots of jewellery to show their wealth). She was off to attend a wedding ceremony in another village and our driver, was taking her there after dropping us off to hook up with our camels. I asked our driver what the villages thought of his new shiny black 4x4 car as there were no other vehicles in the village. He said that he got treated as a "big man"!
Ramkunda
by Willettsworld
After visiting Bada Bagh, our next stop on our car tour as part of our camel trek was a place called Ramkunda which is about 12km from Jaisalmer. Here, there is a temple that was built by Maharani Mansukhi Devi in the 17th century and is dedicated to Lord Ram. The temple features beautifully carved out of yellow sandstone, statues of four-armed Ganesh, Mahisasur and Bheru. It is the oldest Ram temple of the desert. The temple monument itself has some inscriptions written on the walls and outside on the Govardhan Pillars which were added to the complex in the early 18th century. No one was there when we visited so we had the whole place to ourselves which made a change as temples are usually very crowded in India. It looks as though a priest lives here as we saw cooking pots and empty cans in a kitchen area.

Sam Sand Dunes, 45 away km from Jaisalmer, is the most popular excursion to see the total sandy bush less desert. It has a truly glorious stretch of sweeping sand dunes. It is best to be here at sunrise or sunset, and many camel safaris spend a night at the dunes. The best way to see this and other sights around Jaisalmer is to take a came safari. The standard trip lasts for 4 days and three nights, and offers the opportunity to explore the area in authentic and leisurely fashion, with entertainment by folk performers, visits to villages, and chatter from colourful guides thrown in. However you can also day trip and go by car. Hordes of tourist arrive just before sun set. Camels can be hired easily and you may be able your favourite picture with a lone camel on a desert track and the setting sun in the backdrop. Despite the tourist throng, the place has not lost it magic. The desert festival held sometimes in February each year is a big draw and it is full of fun, colour and laughter, cultural events and competitions.
