Travel Tips for Jaisalmer

Morning ride on the camel

by herzog63

In the morning after waking up and eating breakfast and packing our stuff. We would start out by walking the camels to get their legs stretched out and then when we got on we would make sure the camels walked slow. But by mid morning we would have the camels tuned up and we would be in a full jog!! It was fun for me to ride the camels fast! It made me feel like I was a real man of the desert!! LOL

Steal a bargain on books

by satchmo1963

Somewhere in the middle of the main market of Jaisalmer, below the fort, you will find Bhatia News Agency. If you are approaching the fort gate from Hanuman Chowk, you will find this shop on your right.
Don't be put off by the glitzy magazines and cheap vernacular `how to' books that line the store outside. Walk in, and start your search from among a huge lot of books, both old and new. The categorisations do leave room for improvement, but ensures you earn your bargain in the process. Setting aside the coffee table glitzies on Rajasthan, Art and Kama Sutra aside, you are bound to hit jackpot, dependent on your preference.
I managed to pounce on a first edition of a Shashi Tharoor novel (marked price GBP 6.99) that I'd been hunting for some time; also managed to take away a brand new print of Paul Theroux's `The Great Railway Bazar'. At INR 65 for the former, and INR 200 for the latter, they were complete steals.
And now for the icing on the cake. If you happen to spend some time at Jaisalmer, and intend returning your book after reading, the owner shall gladly take it back, and refund you 50% of your purchase price, irrespective of when you return it.

Desert Villages

by herzog63

I snapped this shot as we were trotting by on our camels. Thats why the angle isn't perfect! We didn't get to visit any of the villages that had people living in them. We only visited abandonded villages. The huts were made of mud with a straw roof. They must be based on traditional designs for desert people. I never saw this style of house in the bigger towns only out in the desert.

The Trio

by Carino about The Trio

The Trio is known as one of the best restaurants in town and maybe in the state. We went during lunch time for a drink (Sweet Lassi at 30 Rp, 7up at 25 Rp). We also had take away food for dinner, which we could enjoy during our train ride. We had Vegetable Fried Rice (50 Rp), Rajastan Gatta (50 Rp, dumpling made with chickpea flour) and Bh. Tomato (60 Rp). Good Stuff!

Camel back riding and nappy rash

by Yso

One of the major things to do from Jaisalmer is to go out into the desert for a camel trek. You can choose between any number of tours - from 1 day with dinner in the desert to one week - or more with special arrangements. Because there are a lot of tourists in Jaisalmer there are a lot of tour agencies. Get reccomendations - don't just go with the cheapest!
If you go for several days I recommend wearing loose but sturdy clithes, and particulary boxer shorts (even for the girls) sinc ethe movement of the camel is a strange one and we all ended up witha sort of nappy rash which was very uncomfortable
