Travel Tips for Jodhpur

Marwar Festival

by keeweechic

In October there is an annual festival of dance and music. This festival celebrates the classical ‘Maand’ style of folk music - music centred on the romantic lifestyle of Rajasthan's rulers. The festival is held over 2 days during the full moon of Sharad Purnima. Other attractions of the festival include horse riding and horse polo.

Musical Serenade

by atufft

After dinner, Belinda and I were the sole audience for a group of outstanding musicians. They sung and played there rather unique variety of Rajasthani music, which I had yet to find recorded anywhere but by our video, until I tracked down the You Tube link below. The Rohet Garh website shows the musicians and their instruments, but basically the trio consisted of organ/accordian type instrument called a harmonium, a drum, and som slap sticks. The music is very percussive, and the singing very soulful and a wonderful accounlike any other Indian music that I had heard. The performance was dedicated to us and we were the solo members of the audience. This stands out as among of the best musical performances I've ever experience--really! Sorry no still pictures. This was a night performance with hardly any light.

Mahamandir Vidhyalay

by abi_maha

This temple is now also a place of education. Hardly popular it is a structure that is beautiful and yet uncrowded! Must see in our opinion for the peace and the birds! We sighted parrots by the hoards! :) Dont miss the yoga asanas on the walls of the temple!

Towers and Gateways

by keeweechic

The main entrance, or Jai Pol, to the fort was built in 1808. The western gate (Fateh Pol) was built to commemorate the reclaiming of the fort from the Mughals by Ajit Singh in 1707, a big event in Jodhpurs history. Lakhna Pol was added during the 19th century and bore the brunt of an attack by the Jaipur army in 1807. Dents are still visible from the cannonballs fired at it. Loha Pol dates back to the 15th century.

Here you will also the handprints of 15 royal satis (Queens) who went through the barbaric and fashionable custom of that time of burning themselves on the funeral pyres of their husbands. It was considered an honour by the women to sacrifice themselves for their men. When Maharaja Ajit Singh died, 5 of his wives as well as 58 of his concubines burnt themselves in this manner. In 1829 the British made sati illegal but the last recorded case in Jodhpur of sati was in 1953. Suraj Pol or Sun Gate, one of the oldest gates in the Fort and leads to the Moti Mahal palace.
