Travel Tips for Jodhpur

The Blue City

by keeweechic

The city is situated on the southern fringe of the Thar Desert. Known as the Blue City due to a great deal of the homes and buildings in the old town being painted in a shade of indigo blue. The blue intensifies as the days bright rays fade. Blue was the colour of the Brahim (member of a priestly section of Hindu society) houses but today even non-Brahim houses are painted blue.

The fort rises from the bluff colored sandstone hill and is so built thet it is not easy tell where the hill ends and stonewall begins.
The Rathore Rajputs built the fort in the15th century and inhabit it until they moved yo Mandore the newly founded capital of Jodhpur.
Has seven gates built at an angle so attacking armies don't get gap for the assault.

mandore gardens

by mantru

Mandore was the former capital of Maharajas of Marwar and is located about 5 miles north of Jodhpur, but was later abandoned for the security of Mehrangarh fort. Here you will find the dewals, or cenotaphs of Jodhpur's former rulers.
Unlike the usual chhatri-shaped cenotaphs typical of Rajasthan, they were built along the lines of a Hindu temple, four stories high, with fine columns and an elegant spire, all in red sandstone. The most impressive is the dewal of Maharaja Ajit Singh (reigned 1678-1724). These cenotaphs are set in beautiful landscaped gardens. Nearby is the hall of heroes, dedicated to various deities and fabled Rajput folk heroes, whose statues are carved out of rock and painted in bright colours. Next door is a larger hall called "The Shrine of the Three Hundred Million Gods", filled with brightly coloured images of the various Hindu Gods. As you climb up the hill, you come to the ruined city of Mandore, with its old palace. The beautiful Maharani's cenotaphs set apart on a rocky outcrop - a ten-minute walk over the hill. Today its extensive gardens with high rock terrace make it a popular local attraction

Jodhpur Clock Tower

by Canadienne

In the centre of the Sadar Bazaar, you'll find this clock tower ~ an excellent point for orienting yourself. There an excellent bookstore nearby and a sweet shop with jalebi, an orange candy that will stick to your teeth.

Another local specialty, to be tried while in the market, is the makhania lassi. . .which is even richer than the norm.

Palanquins were a popular means of travel for royal and noble ladies up to the second quarter of the 20th Century. They were also used by men on special occasions.

This gallery displays one of the richest collections of palanquins in Rajasthan. On display are palanquins for ladies as well as men; covered palanquins were used for the ladies and the open ones for men.
