Travel Tips for Jodhpur

Indian Hospitability

by tremendopunto

The people of India are one of the friendliest and most hospitable people Ive ever met. And they love to celebrate. When we returned from Meherangarh Fort we passed another celebration and without knowing what was really going on we were asked to come in!

It is a pitty I only have this pic, showing me being nicely greeted by those kids.

Mehrangarh Fort - Marks of the Cannon Balls

by Willettsworld

During the reign of Maharaja Man Singh II, Maharaja Jagat Singh of Jaipur attacked Jodhpur at the instigation of Pokran Thakur Sawai Singh Champawat in 1808. The city was captured by the Jaipur army and the Mehrangarh Fort was surrounded by the enemy. The enemies cannon were placed near the Victory Gate. A tough fight took place where numerous soldiers were killed on both sides. The Jodhpur forces fought gallantly and the Jaipur army ultimately fled. To commemorate this victory, Maharaja Man Singh II built the first entrance, Jai Pol (Victory Gate) and added the new fort wall between Dodh Kangra and Jai Pol. The marks of the cannon used in the battle can still be seen today of the walls as well as on the wooden gates.

jashwant thada-details in marble

by mantru

The Jaswant Thada is architectural landmark found in Jodhpur. It is a white marble memorial built by Sardar Singh in 1899 in memory of Maharja Jaswant Singh II. The monument, in its entirety, is built out of intricately carved sheets of marble. These stones are extremely thin and polished so that they emit a warm glow when the sun's rays dance across their surface. Within this cenotaph, there are also two more tombs. The Jaswant Thada is a traditional cremation ground of Jodhpur rulers.
Jaswant Thada is a classic example of the famed Rajputana style of architecture. The main cenotaph is really impressive with its ornamented sculptures, friezes, domes and pillars. You will be also be able to marvel at the separate section of cenotaphs dedicated to the braves queens and concubines who committed sati (self immolation) on the pyre of Jaswant Singh. Figures of dancing girls adorn the pillars of this section and speak a lot about the artistic genius of the sculptors who worked on it.
