There are supposed to be more than 300.000 gods according to Hindu belief. Wherever you go you will find temples, shrines and god statues or symbols on every corner. There is a god for every need - and my personal favourite is Ganesha - the god of good luck and wealth. This statue of Ghanesha can be seen at the foot of the mighty Meherangarh Fort.
The water supply for drinking, cooking, and washing came from a lake, which I believe was a reservoir of sorts that could also provide some irrigation. Women came to the water's edge with jars on their heads.
9 km north of Johdpur is the old capital of Marwar: Mandore. It's gardens are very beautiful. There are the ruins of an old fort, many stupas that remind the untrained eye a bit at a (much smaller) version of ankor wat.
A visit here is great to escape the business of the city. There are many monkeys here as well.
At the gardens there is also a small museum for only 3 roepies.
Jaswant Thada, located half way up the long road that climbs onwards to the fort, is the traditional cremation ground of the rulers of Jodhpur. Taking pride of place amongst the ornamental gardens and chattris is the fabulous white marble memorial to Jaswant Singh II, built in 1899. The cenotaphs of other rulers , in the same neighborhood , are relatively simpler.
Inside the main hall are royal portraits and other possessions.
This image is of the twenty-seventh Rathore Ruler, Maharaja Ram Singh… Abhaya Singh’s son, in fact…and a fellow clansman sitting under an embroidered canopy. The Maharaja sits on a carpet with his sword in front of him. He’s smoking scented tobacco. His hookah has an enameled base and is decorated with images of women.
Notice the way the Maharaja holds the wrist of his clansman as he accepts the drink offered. This is the traditional way of according respect…Spread out in front of them is a tray with carafes of wine and bowls of barbecued meat, the latter making up much of Rajput cuisine.
The night is ablaze with fire-works celebrating the Festival of Lights known as Diwali, celebrated throughout India and Southeast Asia. It honors the triumphant homecoming of Rama; like Krishna an incarnation of Vishnu, one of the Hindu holy Trinity. Rama is worshipped as the embodiment of righteousness.
