Travel Tips for Jodhpur

Sati Handprints

by Canadienne

Just inside the entrance gate to Mehrangarh Fort, you'll come across this relief of handprints on the wall, with flowers strung across and scattered below.

Numerous royal satis, or self-immolations, took place in Jodhpur. Sati is the now-outlawed custom of sacrificing one's life at the funeral pyre of the husband. This decoration honours the memory of those lives. . .

Wonderful Garden

by shane_balmes

Mandore Gardens is the prime attraction of tourists in Jodhpur, with its unique high rock terrace.

The garden contains cenotaphs of former Marwar kings. Unlike normal cenotaphs in the region, the cenotaphs in Mandore are built like traditional Hindu temples. The cenotaphs are made in red sandstone and generally have four elegant storeys. These cenotaphs are surrounded by a beautifully landscaped garden. The garden also contains a ruined fort and palace.

Garden represents greenery, serenity, aesthetic approach, nature and blessing of the Almighty. Gardens in desert lands sound, as if, someone has committed a mistake.

After all the impression of the barrenness of a desert region, it is almost surprising to see the blossoming flowers in the vast landscaped gardens full of divine fragrance and cool breeze that looks like a mirage for an instance. These gardens are the victory of human will over the harshness of the nature and it's a pleasure to stroll through them with all their beautiful pavilions and fountains that adorn them.
