Great hotel
We loved the professioanl and helpful attitude of the staff at Ratan Vilas. They could not be more obliging. The room was large, clean and comfortable and great value for money. I can not recommend it highly enough.

My daughter and I enjoyed a recent visit to Ratan Vilas, especially the kind hospitality of management who allowed us to linger for a day waiting for a late train and were very helpful in other ways. The rooms are excellent, and good cooking is offered (do ask for spicy food if you want it - the buffet will be bland). We found this peaceful hotel to be a pleasant refuge in Jodhpur and excellent value for money.
We stayed at Ratan Vilas in December 2007 and it was very enjoyable. The staff was very helpful and the setup on the hotel was perfect. In the cold month of December you could sit and enjoy a meal in the courtyard in the evening and the kids could run around the front garden during the day. The rooms were very nice and the food was excellent. All in all I find it to be the best option in Jodhpur unless you are willing to use the 1600 dollars that they are charging at the Taj.
Ratan Vilas is a family-run, friendly, welcoming hotel. Bedrooms are pleasant and spotless and the hotel is full of character: the main building dates from 1920 and there are lovely lounges, old furniture, historic photos of Jodhpur life and a pretty open-air dining area.
The hotel is peacefully located with a long driveway and gardens so there is little noise from the streets of Jodhpur. The family and staff are friendly and service is honest: there is a tip jar, so there's no hassle from staff wanting tips, and staff will not recommend shops even if asked!
This is the loveliest hotel of many stayed in during travels in India, with an old-fashioned attitude which means that visitors are treated as guests. An oasis away from the bustle of Indian life and highly recommended.
My wife and I stayed here for a total of 5 nights in March, and we thought it was excellent.
Rooms are spotlessly clean, tastefully decorated with antiques and block-print fabrics, and very quiet. With a pleasant front lawn and courtyard, this is a calm oasis away from the clamor of the city. The owners care about your comfort and happiness, and truly make this feel like home.
Location is a bit out of the way, but it's easy enough to get a trishaw to wherever you need to go.
Food is pretty good.
If you have lots of money and want luxury, then head for a palace or a 5-star property. However, if you want a comfortable, pleasant place to stay that's a great value, then this is a fantastic choice.
We spent one lovely night here in October as part of a cycling trip we did. The hotel was just gorgeous - a lovely old atmospheric building with a peaceful inner courtyard. Our room was huge, with a wonderful antique bed and lovely furniture, and a big, spotless bathroom. The staff were friendly and helpful and the veranda a very peaceful place to sit and while away an afternoon. Breakfast was good.
We really enjoyed our stay here...it was a little slice of old India and we loved every minute.
Can’t add much that hasn’t already been written about this good place to stay; it really is a very calm and high-class refuge from the crowded, polluted streets of Jodhpur. Perhaps a bit too much of a refuge though; location is dull and it takes a while to get to and from the city centre and the fort.
Room was clean and big, as was the bathroom, and staff welcoming and overall friendly. Nighttime, they serve a good buffet dinner around open fire in the courtyard. Strangely enough, card payment was only possible for the room, while cash was required for everything else.
If you arrive by bus or train, try to use their excellent free pick-up service since rickshaw-touts are quite aggressive.
We stayed here with a small tour group - this hotel seems to attract both small tour groups and independent travellers.
My key concern - and it wasn't a deal-breaker - was that our room faced the courtyard where the dining area is (presumably when it's not raining or very cold). It was quite noisy in the morning with the early breakfasters, and I felt a bit "exposed" with people sitting, chatting and eating right outside my door. Not sure what it would be like if you wanted to retire early (fortunately this didn't happen to us). Note there are two upper levels available that wouldn't have the same problem.
Our room was older-style but clean, comfortable and a good size. It was not upmarket. Same goes for the bathroom. In addition to the courtyard, guests have access to communal rooms at the front of the main house (the hotel accommodation is the rear wing). The proprietors (it's their family home) live upstairs in the house. You can sip a V&T or beer in the front loungeroom and look at old photos of the family, who are minor local aristocracy.
There is a newer wing of accommodation adjacent to the main building. Those rooms were not significantly larger, from what I could see, but their fitouts were newer (although some older rooms had been updated).
The buffet dinner was very good - we all went back for more. The courtyard really was a pleasant place to eat.
The hostess seemed very friendly and, while this hotel IS some distance from the centre of town, I was glad of it. The setting was delightful, and there is an established, shady front garden to contemplate.
This is a great value hotel. Very personal attention, warm welcome, lovely room (I think 109).
It was very cold when we arrived, at the temperature dropped to about 3C. In the morning, asked for a space heater which was brought promptly. I'd ask for one right away if chilly.
Like many Indian hotels, the bed is hard. I asked for another mattress immediately upon check-in and within a very short time, I was very comfy!
The neightborhood is a bit of a schlep to old Jodhpur, which initially disappointed me but I became very grateful for the tranquility, and a tuk-tuk was only a couple of bucks to the Clock Tower.
By the way, On The Rocks, about 2 miles from the hotel, was one of the best restaurants I ate at on the trip. Get the chicken with Cashew and Saffron!
we too only stayed one night what a pity.
calm pleasant and quiet
nice rooms
if it had a pool would be my #1 hotel in the indian midrange
