Travel Tips for Jodhpur

Marwar Craft Villages

by Canadienne

The countryside around Jodhpur is home to many Bishnois familes and several different craft villages as well. We spent some time at a co-operative for dhurrie weavers. Their work is highly regarded in the area.

Roopraj, who is on the left in this photo, was the spokesman of the operation. He had a fabulous three-ring binder filled with articles clipped from magazines and newspaper (German Elle, Home Decor, etc.) which featured his co-op. Whenever his name appeared, it was highlighted in yellow and he took tremendous pride in showing us the operation of the co-op and the interlock process.

Jodhpur - view on the blue city

by Luchonda

This blue city raises up at the border of the desert. The old city itself excist out of many small houses (in blue) and narrow streets.
Top off the bill visiting this city is of course another Fort - the Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh Fort - Jai Pol

by Willettsworld

The Jai Pol (Victory Gate) is the first of seven fortified gates to the fort which was built by Maharaja Man Singh in 1806 to commemorate his victory over Jaipur and Bikaner. Just inside the gate to the left is where you pay and collect the audio tour.

Mandore Gardens,Chattris & Cenotaphs

by lynnehamman

Mandore, which is situated about 10kms from Jodhpur, is a great place to visit if you are in Jodhpur. This place was originally the capital of the Rathore royalty and kings of Marwar. In the 15th century, Rao Jodha built a new city, Jodhpur, for reasons of safety. The mighty Mehrangarh Fort with its immense fortifications , was built as the new stronghold.
The remnants of the old capital have been very well preserved, and are set in well kept gardens.
The gardens are set on terraces, on a hillside, filled with bougainvilla and shady trees.Red sand-stone chattris are scattered on the hillside-they are built in Hindu fashion, with a slightly different style to normal chattris.
The most impressive chattri is that of Ajit Singh-It is Rajput architecture at its finest. It has a tall spire which towers above the other chattris.
The history of Ajit Singh is quite interesting. After his death in 1724, his 6 wives and 60 concubines commited sati (which was practiced at the time in Rajasthan).
Higher up on the hill are cenotaphs dedicated to various queens.
Mandore can be reached by Taxi or Auto-rickshaw. The driver will wait.

Mehrangarh Fort - Phool Mahal

by Willettsworld

The Phool Mahal (Hall of Flowers) was built between 1730 and 1750 and is the fort's most opulent chamber being richly gilded and painted. From the gold ceiling with its ornate floral design to the geometric Jali screens fitted with stained glass, it’s the ultimate in oriental opulence. Not surprisingly, the Phool Mahal is a room dedicated to the art of pleasure. In the flickering glow of candlelight reflected from the mirrored ceiling, poets recited lyrical verse, musicians played melodic ragas and dancers danced till dawn. The frieze running beneath the cornice is decorated with Ragmala paintings which bring classical music and traditional poetry to life in a visual form.
