Travel Tips for Jodhpur
Jaswan Thanda
by Yso
Visit the Jaswant Thanda - an impressive white marble mausoleum dedicated to Jaswant Singh II. The views over Jodhpur are great, the gardens are nice to walk around, and there are not too many people.
Usually you can visit the Jaswant Thanda on the way to the Fort, which is an absolute must see
Inside Mehrangarh Fort
by Canadienne
Your admission ticket includes an audio player that delivers one of the best performances I can recall hearing anywhere. The quality is excellent and the readings are dynamic and bring the fort to life. The fort tour follows a series of numbered stops; when you are ready to hear the next segment, you enter that on the keypad and you'll be in for a dramatic treat with lots of historical and cultural information.
There are even special "appearances" by the descendants of the maharaja, who reminisce about their days in the royal palace.
Mehrangarh Fort - Audio tour guide
by Willettsworld
Take the opportunity to listen to the audio tour within the Mehrangarh Fort as it's one of the best I've listened to. You can pick it up after entering through the main entrance gate (Jai Pol) on the left. It's included in the price of admission. The commentary for the tour, authentic history and family lore; descriptive, evocative and highly informative, is embellished with the reminiscences and views of the Royal Family. The Maharaja Gaj Singh II, who ascended to the Gadi of Jodhpur in 1952 at the age of four, the 38th Rathore Chief in direct line from Rao Sheoji (1226-1273), shares his memories of the moving Raj Tilak Ceremony at Mehrangarh.
Coronation Throne
by keeweechic
Outside Moti Mahal in the Shringar Chowki or courtyard sits a red sandstone throne called the Sandar Choki. This was meant to be used for coronation ceremonies. The white marble facing was added later in the 1750’s by Bakhat Singh.
Sheesh Mahal
by keeweechic
The Sheesh Mahal is known under several different names - Palace of Mirrors, Glass Palace or Victory Palace. It has small mirrors embed into the walls and ceilings. This idea first came from the Mughal empire in Delhi and was picked up by Jodhpur royalty.
