Umaid Bhawan Palace - Model
To get some idea as to how big the palace is, there's this equally large model displayed in the main hall of the museum. Wonder if it took the model maker 15 years to complete as well!

Great Great Facilities...A1
Unique Quality: We can live here with the real king's family.
I did not stay here but took a guided tour of the palace,
This is one of the heritage hotels, a palace converted to a hotel, and is really beautifull
Unique Quality: Has characteristics of a 4 or 5 star category and is really good
Umaid Bhawan Palace is the only palace to be built during the mid 20th century. Originally it was used for a famine relief project and ensured work for residents for 16 years. Today the Palace is a hotel and a museum and displays weapons and hunting trophies belonging to the Maharaja as well as antique-clocks and crockery. The museum is open from 9.00am – 5.00pm.
The hotel is spread across 40-acres of landscaped gardens. There are 98 rooms with all the rooms being built around a courtyard. There are 2 bars, restaurant and coffee shop, swimming pool, tennis, badminton and volleyball courts, children’s fun zone and arcade shopping.
Unique Quality: The regal suites of the Umaid Bhawan Palace Hotel were previously used by Maharaja Umaid Singh and his Maharani who built the palace.
This place is pricey, but a great experience. The views are incredible, rooms are spacious and historically decorated.
They were filming a movie called "A Night with A king" while we were there. I think we were the only guests who weren't part of the film crew.
This place is one of a kind. It claims to be 5 star, but I think it's more like 3 or 4 as far as accommodations are concerned. The service is great and breakfast is tasty.
Unique Quality: Best views in all of Jodhpur.
A great museum in the palace.
A weird, but cool underground pool in the basement.
There are great Indian furniture and decor stores a short walk and fun from the hotel.

It doesn't get any better than this. A real palace converted into a luxury hotel. The Taj Group by and large does not approach the exacting standards set by the Oberois in India, but in Umaid Bhawan Palace, the Taj has come up with a resounding winner. This is easily among the world's great hotels today. The service levels are extraordinary and the physical grandeur of the property inspiring. The renovated rooms are large, luxurious and very well appointed. The alfresco Pillars restaurant is one of a kind; every morning at breakfast I had peacocks for company.
My friends and I stayed at Umaid Bhawan Palace in December, 2006.
The hotel is an epitome of “Indian Heritage Hotel”. The architecture is enthralling, the interior decoration opulent. With such colossal grandeur, a service of aloof efficiency would not be surprising. On the contrary, their service standard was far beyond our expectation.
Our group stayed in four rooms, all with different decoration. The rooms were large, comfortable and seemed to have everything we might need during our stay. What’s lacked thereof was quickly catered to by the staff. The service staffs were polite and attentive yet not intrusive. Coming from Thailand, where good service is commonplace, I’d have to say the service here at Umaid Bhawan is exceptional.
The hotel was recently run by Taj Group and that brought a face-lift, both in facilities and services, to replace the poor reputation the place might have had in the past. Even among Taj Group of hotels, the service here was a cut above the others. (We had a not-so-impressive experience later in the trip at Rambagh Palace in Jaipur.)
One area they might need to improve is F&B: average food at first-class price. There are only two restaurants (with the same menu!) so choices are limited.
All in all for our experience at Umaid Bhawan Palace : The hardware(hotel & facilities) made our stay worthwhile but the software(services) made us want to come back here.
All I can say is that when we were tired and loopy after having a long car journey from Jaipur to Jodphur, once we entered the front gates of the Umaid Bhawan Hotel our jaws dropped to our knees! Buckingham Palace has nothing on this place.
It only got better as we were greeted with hot towels, flower leis, and fresh juice and escorted to the newly renovated wing which consists of the most gorgeous art deco suites.
Then it got even better as we dined at the Pillars on the terrace overlooking what had previously been my personal vision of the "afterlife"....
Absolutely breathtaking, and if you have an opportunity to stay here you should not miss this place! We felt like royalty every minute of our stay.
The service was warm, welcoming, and excellent, the housekeeping and accommodation among the best I have ever experienced. The only reason I am not giving this a 5* review is that the food and menu could have been improved. While the meals were "good" they were not as fantastic as we had enjoyed elsewhere.
That being said (and I am a tough critic) I would highly recommend staying here for a minimum of 2 nights (and bring your bathing suit - the indoor pool is spectacular).
This hotel is superb. I think recently bought out by the Taj Hotel Group. My husband and I have said there several times and were the first people (ever!) to get married there 5yrs ago. Liz Hurley and the Bachans have nothing on us :) The service in true Rajput fashion is second to none and if you can afford the upgrade, it's well worth it.
We spent 2 nights here on our honeymoon last year and it was amazing. None of the pictures do it justice - driving up to the hotel was a real shock. They'd upgraded us to a suite and left us a cake and champagne; the staff did make us feel incredibly special. Our room had 4 balconies, some overlooking the immaculate grounds and some overlooking Jodpur fort - infact the suite was the size of a one-bed London flat. I don't know what the standard rooms are like but our suite was astonishing.
The hotel has a fabulous colonial feel to it, and the level of service was spectacular (for example, there appeared to be staff who purely opened doors for you). A nice touch was the turn down service which included filling the bath with rose petals and floating candles (they do this at other Taj hotels). In the evening the steps down to the lawns were covered in tea lights, and there was a sitar player for a couple of hours. We didn't actually get to see much of Jodpur as we just did not want to leave the hotel.
I cannot recommend this hotel enough - unless it becomes more touristy off the back of Liz Hurley - and the staff were out of this world. Nothing was too much trouble - infact we felt like we weren't asking enough of them!
