More about Wildflower Hall In The Himalayas

Shimla

by indiabazaar

When you've done the obligatory stroll along The Mall dreaming of Kipling, Burton and Merchant-Ivory, it's worth exploring the narrow streets which fall steeply away from the ridge to colourful local bazaars. There's also an interesting walk to Jakhu Temple, dedicated to the monkey god Hanuman. It's located near the highest point of the ridge and offers fine views of the town, surrounding valley and snow-capped peaks. Other scenic spots nearby include the 70m (230ft) high Chadwick Falls, the picnic spot of Prospect Hill, and Wildflower Hall - the site of the former mansion of Lord 'Your-Country-Needs-You' Kitchener. The ski resort of Kufri is just 15km (10m) east, although snowfalls have been so paltry recently that there are plans to suspend tourist operations. If there is snow, the slopes are suitable for beginners and anyone with a decent plastic bag and a thick pair of trousers. Snow is most likely between January and February.

Pretty close to perfect

I have to say that I'm a bit surprised by some of the less than stellar reviews for the Wildflower.

I stayed there in December last year and had quite the most amazing time - the views are amazing, especially from the not tiny terrace and outdoor hot tub (note that it's a hot tub, not a pool).

Check out some of my photos on flickr - tagged with wildflower ad shimla to get an idea of the place.

Service was delivered with a smile and was always excellent..mind you...I'I find that being nice (and remembering that hotel staff are human beings) generally means that you get treated well.

Went swimming, had a couple of massages, went hiking (with a delicious if slightly odd packed lunch prepared by the hotel) and mountain biking. The hotel provides a guide for the biking, and he was a really nice, polite guy. On the way back he told us that he lived in a village below Shimla - each day it takes him over an hour to walk up to the hotel, and a similar amount of time to walk down again. Oh - and we said hello to his mum as we biked past her house.

I could go on and on about little touches that made the 4 nights special. I realise this sounds like a complete fanboy tract, but I just cannot understand how you cannot love the experience, unless you're deliberately looking to be picky.

Majestic even in Monsoon Season

by TripAdvisor Member billgo

This excellent hotel is in a beautiful mountaintop location surrounded by cedar forest preserve. The rooms are beautifully furnished and very clean and well maintained. The views on the south facing side are spectacular (although we were there during monsoon rain season so views were intermittent). The small spa pool outside at the terrace edge has wonderful views of mountains and valleys below. Indoor pool is also very nice and well maintained. Food was very good, especialy dinners and desserts were heavenly. Very nice gardens in front of hotel and some short walking trails. Service was exceptionally good, throughout the hotel and the ayurvedic massage was wonderful (staff were very professional and polite, clean facilities). General Manager (David Matthews) was very welcoming and personally attentive to all guest I saw. The local monkeys visit outside the rooms on the balconies, so guests are warned not to leave windows open -- they would sometimes enter rooms and steal items (especially the fresh mango fruit the hotel provides in the rooms). I found the monkeys facinating to watch through my large room picture window. Very quiet and pleasant at night at the hotel.

If you have the time, travel from Shimla down to Kalka via the narrow guage railway line. The most incredible 5 hours of scenery I have ever experienced.
