Jag Mandir - near Jag Niwas (actually a super hotel and scéne of a James Bond Film)
played a very important role in history.
The legend is telling that Sjah Jahan was inspired by this temple to construct some parts of the famous Taj Mahal.
We always stay at Jaiwana Hotel- so I have eaten many,many meals at the Rooftop Restuarant. Not only is the food of the very highest standerd- the view is spectacular.
Breakfast, lunch or dinner is served indoors, in a glass enclosed diningroom, or outdoors on the rooftop terrace.
The service is prompt, friendly and efficient. Yash, the owner/manager oversees all meals, and runs a strict ship here. He also makes sure that all his guests are well looked after. What amazed me (although it should not have) was the amount of NON residents at the hotel, who came to this restuarant just for meals.They were staying at nearby hotels, but word gets around regarding good food. And so good it is! Yash keeps the menu up to date by changing it monthly. The vegetarian dishes are tasty, imaginative and unusual. Meat dishes are also available. Also on the menu are a few Western favourites, like pastas- although I cannot imagine anyone choosing these over the great Indian dishes available.
Desserts are a speciality too, with a wide variety.
Booking ahead is a good idea- it gets crowded. Go at sunset, and watch the sun setting over the Arravelli Hills & Lake Pichola. An unforgettable sight.
Beer and wines are available. Vegatarian "Sizzler" - comes sizzling and steaming to the table. It is mouth-watering & spicy.

And for dessert- the Gulab Jamun (hot) is the best in India. Wickedly rich.
The City Palace was a defensible building designed to fool invaders and make defense of the Mewar Rajput easier. For example, the doorways are low in places, and the complex is deliberately confusing in terms of layout. There are several sections, including the queen's palace. Mewar artistic style was paramount among the Rajputs of this area, so the decorative features, including the peacock paintings are lovely. Once, while under threat of invasion by the Mughals, the Mewar leader challenged his enemy to a dual of the arts. Let's fight by seeing who can produce the most lovely art was his challenge.
Definitely a must activity is to watch the famous movie of 007. Indeed some screen has been made here in Udaipur. Every Guesthouse has a free playing every evening, so you are not in the position to miss it!!! At least one time!
