Hotel Tsolhamu: Budget hotel for backpackers

This hotel is run by a Tibetan family and is located at Balwakhani which is 10 minutes walk from the city centre. Rooms are clean and the food awesome. During breakfast you are served Tibetan bread with peanut butter and honey, Tsampa with milk, Tibetan tea or just normal tea and coffee. Food is also great. They serve both local and Indian. Try the momos. Its fantastic.

A double room costs Rs. 550/- . Bed tea is complimentry.

So next time you are in Sikkim, try this place.

Great food, clean rooms and lovely views. Rooms have attched bathrooms with 24 hours hot and cold water. Cable TVs, laundry and a travel desk.

Hotel Fair View , Near Assembly Hall.: Gangtok's Budget Accomodation-IV

I visited this hotel on 15th April as I was looking for some budget accomodation of Gangtok, which I would like to put on VT for review and for the benefit of my fellow traveller. I did not stay here but I found this hotel to be very clean acompared to the price.

The rooms have twin beds for less than Rs.1000/- or USD$ 25 per night. In case you arrive in off season , you may get a room for Rs.500 or USD$ 10 only with hot water.

Please get in touch by mail or over phone to Mr. Kishore Kattel ( +91-9434166995), who is the owner of this hotel.

The Royal Demazong: Perhaps Gangtok's Best Hotel

I found in VT there is not much iformation on Gangtok accomodation. This time I visited several top of the class hotels and made a proper survey. I did not stay in this hotel but we kept our top performers here. This is perhaps the best hotel today and in one word it can be described as Honey Mooner's Paradise. The Royal Demazong, is located between Tsomgo Lake and Gangtok town about 6 kms from Gangtok, near Gnor Gompa facing the legendary Chola Mountain range. Yes you can see Mt.Kanchendjonga clearly from here. It is located in a secluded place and offer very personalized hospitality. You can also have conference here and a large party. This is a resort par excellence!!

This is owned by one of the richest person of Sikkim, who also enjoyed the blessing of Sikkim's Ruler Chogyal, who gifted him his 1970 Mercedese Benz as a souvenier. It is on display there. ( Read more on off the beaten tip about this car and Chogyal)

The Royal Demazong has 20 plush suite rooms. All rooms are centrally heated, having attached bath and bath tub with running hot and cold water. It also has everything you would expect from a good 3 star hotel. It has it's 10 acres private lawn, for party , birdwatching, lazying around and spend those precious moments with your loved ones. A truely deluxe hotel associated with true Sikkimese Hospitality. They have internet facility, relaxed seating arrangement with fire place, bar, food is mixture of Sikkimese, Indian, Continental, Chinese....
They also have pick up and drop facility right from Bagdogra airport/ NJP Station or bus stand from Gangtok!

Their marketing agent very soft spoken Mr. Prabir Sen will make it possible! Mr. Sen, a Bengali now stays in Gangtok, is also synonym with Hotel industry and tourism in Sikkim. He has done quite a lot for the development of Sikkim tour and Hotel industry. His cell nos are : +91-9434024070/9832089334.

For more details and booking please visit their website.

A truely great experience.

Hotel Malancha at Baluakhani: Gangtok's Budget Accommodation -III

This hotel was next to Hotel Sonali, where we stayed in Gangtok. This is also one of the budget hotels of Gangtok. Facilities are almost equal as Hotel Sonali. They also have a restautrant which offers ndian, Chinese and Sikkimese food as well. Prices are very reasonable.

Hotel Glacier at M.G.Road: Gangtok's Budget Accommodation -I

We did not stay here but we checked this hotel on M.G.Road. M.G.Road has many hotels to suit all the budget. The rooms are clean and comfortable for the price. They also offer hot water in the room. From the entrance you need to walk down to get access of this hotel.

Hotel Sonali: Gangtok's Budget Accomodation:

We found this hotel from net. This is one of the many budget hotels of Gangtok. Price is very resonable and rooms are more or less comfortable. We spent one night while going to North Sikkim and while returning for two more nights. Food is homely and tasty. All the rooms have geysers and running hot & cold water. They give only tea as room service but breakfast, lunch & dinner have to be taken at dining hall. Service is very fast all the service boys are very polite. On request they will arrange transport for local seightseeing and book tours to Nathu La Pass, Tsomgolake and North Sikkim at a very resonable cost. The current rate for Tsmgo and Nathu La Pass tour is Rs. 350/- per head including permission. For North Sikkim tour it is Rs. 2200 to 2600 per head for two night three days tour all inclusive.

The ever smiling manager Mr.Debasish Das is always at your service. For booking please get in touch either directly with him or the proprietor Mr.Subhash Ray at Kolkata.

Despite being budget hotel our room had a panaromic view of Kanchenzonga peaks. However we could never see it as it was always foggy out in the hills.

Compared to the price this hotel I shall rate very good.

The Golden Pagoda: Second Cleanest Room in India

Despite being small, the room is the second cleanest room we have stayed in whilst being in India. (We have been in over 25 at the last count). The rooms are very clean, no scary electrics and all the lights worked. It is very comfortable, with plently of bed covers, T.V and clean towels and plenty of hot water. The views from the rooms would have been great if there was no cloud. The staff are very friendly and the food in the restaurant is good. Recommend Beans on toast for breakfast. They do have larger rooms available, but get booked up very quickly. They shut there doors at 10pm, but you can still get in.

Great views if you have a clear day. Also good location for internet, resturants etc

"Central Modern Lodge": basic accomodation in 'gangtok'

booked into the "Central Modern Lodge." Well, the place might have been somewhat central, but 'modern' - it was not. Having stayed in several other places since, I think that I can say with some authority, that the place was actaully a complete kip. So, picture it... having not showered in about 36 hours (and having been on the road all day/night) I was more than ready, at about 9:30pm, to jump into a much anticipated, steaming hot shower before heading to bed. But alas, this was not to be. The 'shared' shower was occupied..... and stayed occupied until around midnight (with the arse that was in there, doing laundry following his personal bathing) I finally seize my opportunity to get in there and what do you know? NO Hot water. I was pissed, to say the least! I went to bed that night, a very angry, very tired (but clean) girl.
to add insult to injury, I came to find out that the 'arse' was a member of staff!! Our waiter, no less, for the next however many days. You can only imagine the ribbing that he received from me for the duration!
Though the place was a bit of a dump, the restaurant actually served up some really good food...

after the initial set-back on evening one, i found the staff to be very friendly & extremeley pleasant...

Hotel Tibet: Best hotel I have ever stayed in? I think so....

This is the best hotel I have ever stayed in. Not because it's posh, or becasue it has a big pool and sauna (it has niether). It has the combination of service, quality and style. The hotel feels like its centuries old (I don't think it is though!) and while we were here the rain storms were amazing. We had a rear facing room which looked over the mountains and the view any time of the day was breathtaking. The storms often cut off the power supply and someone would turn up with a handful of candles. The hotel was at the top end of our budget but it pays just to turn up and try and haggle something. We maanged to get a room for around 1200 rupees a night but their average room rate is much higher and this place is often fully booked. If you are ever in this part of the world you have to stay here!

The hotel has perhaps the best restaurant and bar in town which is handy. The nice thing about this part of the world that in addition to the standard Indian food you cna have excellent Nepalese and Tibetan cuisine (I can still taste those mo-mo's. There is a gift shop with knowlledgable staff too.
