Cold, cold, cold!
We made a change to our itinerary and ended up in Gangtok without a hotel reservation. After a long drive and checking and rejecting 2 other hotels, we settled on Hotel New Castle.
We reserved a "suite" room with a terrace. Well, it really wasn't a suite but it was suitable. The real problem was that it was February and absolutely freezing outside. We went upstairs to our room where it was absolutely freezing inside! The room had a high peaked ceiling and of course, no central heat. We had a heater sent up to the room – a small coil heater (with no fan). When that didn’t help, we had another heater sent up - a small electrical heater (which used so much "juice" that everything else in the room had to be unplugged in order to use it!). Still didn’t help. Extra (thin) blankets didn’t help either. We froze through the night. The next morning my husband woke up very sick. Needless to say we never got any use of the terrace.
The hotel was in a good location and I'm sure it would be nice in the summer. But there's no way I'd recommend it in the winter!!
