7 hours of Transit at the Chennai Anna - International airport
by eastrunner
Hiya,
My parents and sister with her 2 kids are flying in from Colombo for a long haul flight out of Chennai to North America on Jet airwars. Due to the new indian visa rules that one can't return to india within 2 months they will have to be in the chennai intenational lounge for like 7 hours. So a few questions.
1. Is there a business class lounge at the airport? what does it offer
2. Are there hotels/day rooms within within the Airport intl lounge? and how do I find prices and details?
3. What other services are available at the airport.
4. Any thoughts suggestions to make the trip more comfortable easy for them.
Thanks in advance
ER
Re: 7 hours of Transit at the Chennai Anna - International airport
by vpas
there is no hotel facility in the chennai airport.7 hours is a longtime to be there.there is a business class lounge.they have restaurants and food/snack bars.there is a book shop.i have seen some curio shops and indian sovenier shops.i do not know if there is a spa.but with the kids around(how old are tehy?)one would think it is better to first take a leisurely meal and then go to the lounge and rest and then slowly venture into the shopping area before boarding the flight.
However, the facilities and shopping is in no way on par with those in the airports one finds in singapore or k.;. or other countries.
hope this helps,

Pre-paid taxi service
by PierreZA
Do make use of the pre-paid taxi service at the airport. There are about three operators to choose from; I made use of the Government-approved operator.
A trip from the airport to Egmore only cost Ind Rs 250 (January 2008).
Marina Beach
by GK2005
Marina Beach in Madras is the second longest beach in the world. Considered one of the loveliest beaches in the world, it offers a tremendous respite from the sapping heat of Madras. The waves in the Marina beach are indeed quite powerful and swimming here wont be a stroll in the park. The golden sands of the beach enhances its beauty and is not rough on the legs when you walk on it. The sunrise and sunset at the beach is a sight to behold.
The one too many statues along the stretch of a beach is a bit of an eyesore. There are tons of foodstalls that provide various kinds of food and so you would never go hungry if you spend a day at the beach here.
Marina Beach is also very crowded most of the times as its in close proximity to many government offices, a college and the Madras University. It is very well connected by buses from all over Madras.
ST.ANDREWS CHRUCH
by undisputed
Known as the queen of Scottish churches in the East, St. Andrew's Church was built by the British East India Company around 1821. With ornate white Doric columns, tiled marble floors and a high sky blue dome decorated with gold stars, indeed, this is the most beautiful church in Chennai.
Maddening Madras !!!
by GK2005
Madras, recently rechristened Chennai is the biggest city in South India. The southern port city is also one of the 4 major metropolis of India which serves as the center for visiting a specific region.
Madras is also one of the oldest cities in India. As a city, unless you are a resident, this place is likely to drive you nuts unless you slow down and take your time to explore this city. The public transportation in Madras is very efficient in that you can find a train or bus to go to anyplace without any fuss. The Madras international airport is a reasonably decent sized airport and is located just outside the city. It takes about 45 minutes from the airport to get into the city center. The airport also has a local train station just a bit outside but unless you are not carrying heavy luggage, this wont be an option unlike the European cities. Trains are frequent and can take you to the city area in about 30 minutes.
Madras is also the nerve center of Southern India. Recently, Bangalore is slowly eroding into that claim even though Bangalore is slightly smaller compared to Madras. Madras is also well connected to the rest of India through Indian Railways. Madras has two major rail termini, one at Madras Central and the other at Madras Egmore. Madras Central serves as the terminus for trains that serve the Eastern, Western and Northern India. Madras Egmore serves the Southern Region.
