T Nagar - shopping heaven
by IoannaE about Nalli's
Nalli's in T. Nagar is actually two shops: a huge, showy multi-story emporium and the more modest (and more interesting) old shop which looks like it hasn't changed much in decades.
My Madras friends say Nalli's is a good place to shop when you know what you're looking for - it can get frantic at times, and it's worth watching your bag - but on my visit it was relatively quiet and since I'd already been to a few shops I could fake some knowledge.
There's a huge selection of saris in most Southern Indian styles, especially the whole price range of Kanchi silk.
T. Nagar, and specifically Usman road, is a very lively shopping area; worth visiting just for looking around. Kanchi silk and other sarees from 2000 to 20000 Rupees and counting....
Greasy Spoon, Indian Style
by tayloretc about Hotel Coronet
A Chennai equivalent of a greasy spoon diner. You find this kind of place everywhere, usually a room with fluorescent lights and minimal attempts at décor, no air-conditioning, and a steady stream of locals (usually men). They often have odd English names (Hotel Runs, anyone?).
Hotel Coronet is just down the street from work, so my colleagues often eat here or get take out for lunch. I finally tried it one late night, and was pleasantly surprised. Huge portions of tasty and obviously fresh food, good flat bread, and tikka that will take the paint off the walls, just like it’s supposed to.
Open until 2am, free home delivery.

Chennai

Chennai is a perfect cloth shopping stop. The modern shopping centers and bazaar streets (Pondy & Panagal Park) offer a broad choice for all pockets. George town is another surprising, springing life, commercial area where shops are gathered for type of goods.
