recommend a family friendly hotel in Chennai.

by alucaro

Hi I will be in and around Chennai for a week in Dec. Anyone here can recommend a decent and reasonable priced hotel in Chennai for a family of four? Not too far from the shopping area but not too crowded. Any good places to recommend for Veg food ?

Thanks in advance

There are a number of places that you could stay at in Chennai. If you want to stay closer to the shopping places, best would be T. Nagar.

You could try Hotel Ashoka on Pantheon Road in Egmore. This is also very centrally located. And the restaurant in this hotel serves amazing vegetarian food.

You could check out Little Italy for Italian veg food. The many number of Saravana Bhavans around the city serve good veg food as well.

Travel Tips for Chennai (Madras)

T Nagar - shopping heaven

by IoannaE about Nalli's

Nalli's in T. Nagar is actually two shops: a huge, showy multi-story emporium and the more modest (and more interesting) old shop which looks like it hasn't changed much in decades.
My Madras friends say Nalli's is a good place to shop when you know what you're looking for - it can get frantic at times, and it's worth watching your bag - but on my visit it was relatively quiet and since I'd already been to a few shops I could fake some knowledge.

There's a huge selection of saris in most Southern Indian styles, especially the whole price range of Kanchi silk.

T. Nagar, and specifically Usman road, is a very lively shopping area; worth visiting just for looking around. Kanchi silk and other sarees from 2000 to 20000 Rupees and counting....

Greasy Spoon, Indian Style

by tayloretc about Hotel Coronet

A Chennai equivalent of a greasy spoon diner. You find this kind of place everywhere, usually a room with fluorescent lights and minimal attempts at décor, no air-conditioning, and a steady stream of locals (usually men). They often have odd English names (Hotel Runs, anyone?).

Hotel Coronet is just down the street from work, so my colleagues often eat here or get take out for lunch. I finally tried it one late night, and was pleasantly surprised. Huge portions of tasty and obviously fresh food, good flat bread, and tikka that will take the paint off the walls, just like it’s supposed to.

Covelong Beach is the place where the French General Laboudonnais landed his troops in the year 1746. In 1752, Robert Clive took it and destroyed it. A canal running from Chennai to Mahabalipuram separates Covelong Beach from the mainland. Get to know more about Covelong Beach during Chennai Tours.

Today Covelong Beach is famous for the Fisherman’s Cove Resort that is set up here. Belonging to the prestigious Taj Group of Hotels, this resort comprises of rooms and cottages overlooking the beautiful Covelong Beach. There is also a village in the vicinity of Covelong Beach in Chennai. Having a wide range of palms, this village is famous for the fishing activities. Chennai

by assedo

Chennai is a perfect cloth shopping stop. The modern shopping centers and bazaar streets (Pondy & Panagal Park) offer a broad choice for all pockets. George town is another surprising, springing life, commercial area where shops are gathered for type of goods.
