Chennai Beach (or Marina Beach) is one of India's longest, running along 13km the city's coastline. It's a decent route to walk from the War Memorial to the San Thome church (very nice!). Move a couple of blocks inland from there and you'll find yourself at the Kapaleeswarar Temple, which I highly recommend visiting.
The beach is often crowded and very littered though. . .
Be prepared to fix flat rates with autos before you go, and it shouldn't be the rate the driver quotes you first. (An Indian friend told me that for him to go a certain distance would be 50 rupees. Us together was 70. Me alone was originally quoted as 120.)

I mainly remember the Archaeology section (as you might expect), which had a fantastic Bronze Gallery, full of statues; and some wonderful early Buddhist stone sculptures. There was also a good display on the Indus.
There was also a section on old coins, and an Anthropology department focused on the tribes of Southern India, but the rest of the museum was mostly stuffed animals in various poses!
When we were there the National Art Galley was closed as the building, a wonderful Mughal style edifice in red stone, was falling down.
In another building was a large bookshop, though sadly no novels.
Entry fee was 250INR for non-Indians. Photography is not allowed inside.
