Fresh Coconut Milk
by tayloretc
This is a great way to ease the effects of the heat. (Coconut is one of the "cool" foods, meaning it subtracts from your body temperature.) Every other corner and long-ish straight-away has someone selling fresh coconuts - take advantage! First they'll cut the end off (with a scary machete) so you can drink the fresh milk (through a straw, on request), then they scrape the flesh out for you to eat.

George Town / Parry’s Corner
by PierreZA
One of my favourite areas in Chennai. It feels as if you are in a different town when walking around here. You will see many cycle-rickshaws (some partly motorized), and plenty of shopping opportunities. It is best maybe just to walk and get lost a bit. There are plenty of smaller Temples in the area. I also came across an Armenian Church, which was being renovated at the time.
The High Court is a complex of buildings worth visiting, a beautiful red colour and also beautiful architecture.
Chennai, formerly known as Madras
by John_NL
"Bye bye Chennai"
Chennai is a city I visited frequently, until now. I have switched jobs and I will not be going there anymore. I have some mixed feelings about this. On one hand it is nice to visit a city/country that has totally different standards then what we westerners are used to. On the other hand, it is the most dirty and traffic polluted place I have visited in my life....
On this page I will share some experiences with Chennai. Note that I have been there a couple of times, but always for work so I didn't have much time to go and have a good look around. Sometimes I took a weekend to get acclimatised and prepare for a week at the office.
"Fort St. George"
Chennai isn't well known for it's historic sights, but here's one: Fort St. George. The surroundings are now a compound for the state government. The Fort itself has a gallery where you can see old paintings of the glory days of colonialism.
"Mamalapuram / Mahabalapuram"
This site is quite special, and so know the locals he made it a complete tourist trap. If you don't mind salesmen hasseling you every step of the way, this is a must see. The sea side temples of Mamalapuram have been chipped out of massive blocks of granite.
