Good option near station
This hotel is one of many along Kennet Lane which runs away from Egmore train station. It has nice, friendly and polite staff and I took a single non A/C room for Rs672 (inc tax). For this I had a single bed, bedside desk, large table, wardrobe, ceiling fan, table, 2 plastic cushioned armchairs, stall, desk, TV and 24hr hot water. Everything was clean and tidy plus they have an Iway internet place and a very good restaurant downstairs.

Hotel near Egmore station
My stay here at the Pandian was a pleasant one. Its right opposite the Egmore railway station, reasonably priced for me, single bed for one person costing around Rs. 700. Inflation might cause it to go a little further in the future.
If you get to book it online you might get a discount in the price, sites like makemytrip.com and cleartrip.com.
Unique Quality: The lane has phone booths, net cafes and restaurants. You can catch the train from right across the road and also you can catch the local train to get to the airport if you have a domestic flight, saves money and time!
