visit the kabaleeshwar temple in the heart of the city. The temple is open for worship from 4 am to noon and from 4.00 to 8.00 pm. For hand held cameras visitors are expected to pay Rs 5 and Rs 101 for video and movie cameras that draw on the temple's electricity supply. temples are the arteries of this ancient city steeped in tradition. there are enough temples in chennai itself to fascinate one and all... 1. Besant nagar beach. safe till 2 in the night. absolutely essential in the summer as the cool breeze wafts in from the water.
2. Specer Plaza. for cheap and comfortable shopping (its air conditioned)
3. kabaleeshwar, nanganallur, ashtalakshmi, adayar guruvaayoorappan and the 100 other temples. for the calm and soothing atmosphere and sense of faith.
4. fighting (in some cases literally) with the autodrivers.
5. Cinema theatres. the chennaites love their movies. some of the theatre complexes rival the ones abroad. check out an english movie in Shree or Studio 5, the best theatres in chennai.
Auto-rickshaw

I found that it was not easy to negotiate with drivers in Chennai. But, do persist and decide on the rate and destination before you get in. There are many to choose from, so if not happy, try the next one, they will surely give you a good price then.
As Chennai is so spread out, I did find it useful to hire a rickshaw and driver for a few hours to show me around and take me to specific sights.

Drive to Mahabalipuram
by abi_maha
Ride down to this place on the awesome ECR (East Coast Road) on a nice sunny weekend for a truly unforgettable experience!!
Mahabalipuram lies on the Coromandel Coast which faces the Bay of Bengal. This is an elegant place to watch which a well established sea port was during the 7th and 10th centuries of the Pallava dynasty. This was the second capital of the Pallavas who ruled Kanchipuram. Formerly, mahabalipuram was known and called as Mahabalipuram. The former name of this place ‘Mahabalipuram’ has a history. A very rude cruel king Mahabali reined this place and in a fierce battle king Mahabali was killed by Lord Vishnu and the place was named after the dead, arrogant kind Mahabali.
It was during the reign of King Narasimha Varman I, the name Mahabalipuram was changed. It was renamed mahabalipuram which is called till now. There is a story behind. The name Mamallpuram king Narasimha Varman I was a great and valiant warrior. He was given the title Mamalla which means ‘the great wrestler’ so the name was converted from Mahabalipuram to mahabalipuram considering the great king and his achievements.

About 900 kms from Madras you can visit Kanya Kumari (also known as Cape Comorin), the the southern-most tip of India and the Indian sub-continent, touching the Indian Ocean and intersecting the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.
This IS lands end! On a piece of rock (see picture) just off this tip is a memorial honoring Swami Vivekanand, one of the greatest thinkers and philosophers this country has had.
Significant landmarks include the Kumari Amman Temple dedicated to the goddess Parvati and The Gandhi Memorial where an urn containing Mahatma Gandhi's ashes is kept.
