Hotel Regent: Quiet courtyard hotel
In the centre of Kennet Lane's chaos, but set back from the road, the Regent is almost tranquil. Very clean rooms surround a shady, freshly swept courtyard. In Mar 2009, room 37 cost us 315INR.

Krishna Park Hotel: Great Hotel in Egmore area. Near train station.
1000 rupees for a double AC room. central location. This hotel is a little gem, with brand new stainless steel bathroom fixtures, new AC units, soft beds, clean sheets, great staff. It will make you forget you are in India, and the standards set here for this price range are hard to beat.
Very clean bathroom, HOT WATER 24hours, with a Giza. Great for a hot shower.

Guest House & Home Stay in Chennai:
We went to Chennai for Rakhi's treatment with Apollo Hospital in December'05, we stayed there for 10 long days. It was not really a touristy tour, when the investigations were going on myself and Munu toured the city. Then after the treatment Rakhi too joined us so we made tour to Mamallapuram, Kanchipuram and outskirts of Chennai. We were not sure as how many days we shall be there as we need to be around Apollo Hospital always. We stayed in a guest house near Apollo ( There are many guest houses near Apollo or other hospitals in Chennai to suit every budget as some people stay for months). The list provided below is the approved Home Stay in Chennai by Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation. I am sure the individual houses in Chennai offering Home Stay are good, clean and with in our budget. The rates are decided on one to one basis. Please write to them or send a mail in case you are interested.

Hotel ASHOK RESIDENCY: Off the Beaten Track
If you need a decent budget hotel, this can fill the bill. NOT top of the line, but decent rooms with clean bedding, reasonable bathroom and a small restaurant with room service.
The staff at the desk were always helpful, even when requesting to change my room to a nicer one they still charged me the lower rate.

hotel aruna: best location but
This Hotel is right across T nagar busstand . You can walk from there to the shopping centre, mambalam railway station. It is situated at a vantage point. But appearances can be deceptive
the rooms are crampe, bathroom overflows in to the bedroom all the time and staff is not interested in cleaning and daily change of linen. torn sheets, dirty toilets, non AC rooms can be hell during the night. the windows open in to nearby buildings so not advised. room service slow. They have a restaurant which opens only during late evenings so don't know how good it is.
advisable if you need some place near the busstand to dump your luggage

Appu Guest House: Budget Hotel
Appu Guesthouse is in Mylapore. It is a small and difficult to find out place in Mylapore. The hotel has single and double rooms. The single room without AC costs 500 Rs for a day and with AC costs 750 Rs. The hotel lobby is dingy and dark but the rooms are average sized with good lighting. The toilets are usable and in my room the gyser was not working. There is a resaurant in the hotel, but I would recommend to go out and try the south indian food (There are lots of good restaurants nearby). The rooms have a TV and telephone. Overall it is better to stay here if you have no other option left.

5 Star - Suppossedly: Radison Hotel
I'll never go there again. It sucks. Everything is expensive and the staff are not polite when I visited. I only stayed for 2 days and off I go to another place.
Its only that air stewardess will be staying in that hotel and there is no view to the outside.

Hotel Picnic: It's no picnic in the park... but it has a bed...
My friend arranged our stay at this hotel for a night. Just before we head off to Vizag for a wedding.
The hotel is as close as you'd want to be to the Railway station. Walking distance indeed.
But alas convenience comes at a cost. The Hotel has been left to be worn down since openning. The owners obviously don't put money back into refurbishing the rooms. And for the price you pay (about 800 rupee per night aircon room) it's not good value.
Pay the extra to go elsewhere.
The rooms we had had their own unique qualities if thats what you call them. The furnishings were basic, the beds were basic but most distressing of it all was the bathroom. The Shower had a rusted shell, the room looked old, the sink had no plug hole and the toilet had original seat cover from teh 1970s. Also the bathroom had no drainage point so any water onto the floor had nowhere to go.

various: You shoul'dnt try saving your money here
okay...here we go...the fact is I wouldnt get too adventurous with hotels in chennai. Take a decent pick..depends on your budget. if you go away from the city...you get cheap accomodation but cool qualities...but your transport connections might suck..
If you stay by places like adyar, t. nagar, mount road etc, you get great connections, but you might need to be flexible about your buget. look for youth hostels like ymca..or take a 2 star accomodation in these areas.

Hotel Nitash: Chennai Lodging
This hotel is definitely on the more expensive side for Indian travels. . .about $35 for a double room. I joined a group tour in this city though, so it was arranged through the tour company.
The hotel is well-located and clean. . .it has a nice lobby and very helpful staff. There are also a few good restaurants nearby, but you'll need to ask the staff for recommendations.
