Chennai to Mumbai Train

by Pinoy_Traveller

Hi VTers:

Which train should I take from Chennai going to Mumbai? How many hours?
How much? Is there a comfortable cabin or first class cabin?
Anything that I should know like do's and don'ts or something I should watch out for?

Thanks

Ken

Look up the Indian Railways site. It very extensive and you can book/buy online.

http://www.indianrail.gov.in/

Only drawback is it will only show direct trains and for journeys where you need to change, it will say that there are no trains!

If you find the types of trains and classes confusing, this site is an extremely useful guide to trains and how to get the most out of your journey.

go to http://southernrailway.org/src_dest_trns.php

Enter Source Station Code : MAS
Enter Destination Station Code : BCT OR CSTM
Enter Class : GIVE 1ST CLASS AC
Journey Date : GIVE THE DATE OF JOURNEY

If the above site dosen't work, then go to
sourthernrailway.org and choose trains between stations

fare:
Train Type SUPERFAST
Distance (kms) 1274
All units are in Rupees(Rs.)

Personal advice: try to go by air travel, it is almost the same amount, go to http://www.makemytrip.co.in/makemytrip/MMTHome.do and you can book your air ticket

Travel Tips for Chennai (Madras)

Toiletries and Medications

by tayloretc

Many brands available in the west are available here under other names. One thing NOT available is Pepto Bismol. (Gelusil is similar, but not as good.) For the most part, you will be able to find what you need, although not always where you expect to find it. If you find something you recognize, buy it - you might not find it again.

Some notes:

Local medications can be very strong, and can make you drowsy and/or nauseated.

It’s hard to get anything that doesn’t have perfume or dye in it (soap, washing powder, etc), so if you’re sensitive, best to bring those things with you.

You can find most contact lens supplies, but they tend to be harsher than what you get in the west. Stores where you buy glasses often have contact lens supplies. Plain saline can be hard to come by.

Not much is stocked for fair-skinned people, including makeup, hair dyes, etc; although you can find reasonably good sun screens (it's desireable to be fair here, so no one wants to be darkened by the sun).

Try the local food, it is wonderfull!

I ate mostly at my hotel, which served a buffet meals and had a nice sit down restaurant. The best time out was when we went to were the locals eat. My friends were polite enough to use spoons at my table, but the others used there hands only! If you get tired of curry try Wimpi's. They server vegi burgers and french fries!

Marina Beach

by PierreZA

A very long beach, stretching for several kilometres, - one of the longest in the world. I visited the beach the evening of January 1st 2008 – thousands of other people also did! A very festive atmosphere with many food stalls etc. It seems that is a very popular outing for the locals, especially between 6 and 9.

Merina - Second Longest Beach

by thanigaiarasu

"Merina Beach Chennai"

The World's second longest (12 km) continuous stretch of beach, in a densely inhabited region, in the world.

Was hit by Tsunami as an aftermath of the 2004 Indian ocean earth quake. The first pictures of the Tsunami was released from this very beach.

First Train Experience...

by coceng

The first train that I took in India was from Chennai Central Station to Quilon Jn. (Quilon Junction as it known as, in the state of Kerala).
From Chennai, it departed at 8 pm, on time departure.
I collected my luggage from the cloakroom at 7.30 pm, could see my train was approaching on the platform.

I could see people were lining up. These people would take the Second Class Compartment & no reservations for them.

I had my reservation so I had to look for my compartment.
Had to really asking people as the compartments were not placed in order.

I found my compartment.

The light was kinda dim but I could see the faces.

There were 2 girls sitting in that compartment.
I said, "Excuse me, this is my seat..." (pointing at the seat by the window).
They didn't say anything but stood up.
I got Lower Berth seat.

I was just looking at other passengers walking along the aisle...

A few minutes later, there was a family came in in that department.

I was just kept quiet.
Didn't try to strike any conversation.
The family & the 2 previous girls started to chat up with each other.

The 2 girls didn't have their reservations, well couldn't get reservations more like.
Me, I am a tourist...there's a even quotas for tourists in train travelling in India.

Train started to move.
A man asking in Hindi what we would like to eat.
I didn't understand what the menu was so I didn't order anything.
The rest of them continued chatting & about 1 hour later, the foods came.

I was not that hungry.
I had my mineral water with me.
But I really wanted to smoke !

I thought I could just lighted up my cigarette.
If I couldn't smoke, the rest of them would tell me, wouldn't they ?

So, I smoked.
I could sense there's some kind of quietness, like they stopped talking with each other.
Maybe because of my cigarette smoke, dunno...
I made sure that the smoke wouldn't bother them anyhow.

At about 9.30 pm, they started to discuss who would sleep where...
This could only happen because they family accepted the 2 girls as part of their family !
Nice.

At 10 pm, I could see HOW the seats were being turned into beds !
Amazing.

The light was off...& I put up my feet.
Dozed off a few minutes later.

The following morning, I could see the rest of the family & the 2 girls.
The 2 girls were staff nurses, going back to their hometown for holiday.
They were working in Culcatta.

I Started to chat with them.

They got off before me so I was all alone in the compartment.
The train arrived in Quilon Junction on time at about 10.10 am, the following day.
A 14 hours journey was done !

Watch the video of this first train trip on HERE.
