car+driver, cost? from chennai to madurai

by marieana

hi
i would like to get your view on the price (Rs 14, 400) an agency suggests for the following
ambassador car takes us from chennai, may be kanchipuram, mama (visit), pondicherry, thanjavur, trichy, then drop at madurai, at hotel.
hope someone can help, I find it excessive, though he says, it includes fuel, driver allowance, interstate permit , toll, car parking)
thanks

I was planning this kind of trip myself so am interested in the costs. Looking at your route to Madurai, I work out that if you continue without any stopping, the journey would take 10 hours so I presume the quote includes maybe one or is it two overnight stops?
I wonder if the Ambassador car has ever had any upgrade ? In view of all the more modern vehicles around in India, it may not be the most luxurious to travel in. I recall travelling in a Morris Oxford in the 1950s.

Calculate the total no. of kilometers travelled.Rate for a cab is INR 5/- to INR 10/- per km. depending upon type of vehicle. The Ambassador should be INR 5/- per km.Consider changing the type of car as the Ambassador will take a lot of time.Opt for a faster & more comfortable car.

I will not suggest visiting these places that you mentioned by car.The amount quoted by you is so expensive. My suggestion would be to travel by train and taking a local taxi in those cities. Some cities don't need taxi/car at all.

You can visit Mamallapuram and can return in the evening. You can hire a car or you can use an air conditioned "get on- get off" as you like bus which you can use.

Similarly you can vsit Kancheepuram too (though not by above bus).

From Chennai egmore station there very convenient trains to Trichy.Tanjore is only about 1hr by car/train from Tiruchy. You Can hire a car in tiruchy for local sight seeing. Local sight seeing in Tanjore doesn't need transport as they are all in walking distances.

From Tiruchy, there are trains to Madurai. Buses are available 24x7!!!

Still if you wish to hire a car, you can hire a better one than Ambassador. The rates would be around Rs10 per KM with night halt charges for the driver and all toll gate fees, parking etc. to your account. The rates are always inclusive of fuel. There is no other permit charges except for Pondicherry.
You may contact other agencies so that you get a better rates.

Hope this helps.
Have a nice and safe journey.

OK so direct route Channai - Madurai is about 500 kms. So about I.Rps. 5,000 for direct. Add for side trips plus add for overnight???? Under 1,000 for sure. And that's in a good car it seems.

Night charges are INR 200/- + any toll taxes on the way + permits required if any.Since you are travelling within Tamilnadu, permits should not be required.

thx
yeah i see, no trains or buses as time is money. very fast visit to tamil nadu, only 7 days, so dont want to spend time rushing to bus or train stations and get into much trouble;if i were spending 3 months, i would have taken time

Kapaleeswarar Gopura

My basic knowledge of the Hindu pantheon of gods is that Vishnu is the one who carries a conch shell (along with an ax, mace and a spinning disc in his other three hands). But this figure is clearly not Vishnu, so I'm stumped. If anyone can enlighten me, please do. . . :-)

chennai airport

by pravdr

If you are expecting someone at chennai airport.no need to rush headlong into parking lots.they charge you and there is no shade.

i will suggest you an alternative.just outside the airport is the airport road with lots of shade due to trees and a small hillock overlooking the airport.

some local trains pass by so that you can while away your time in comfort.when your arrival comes you can see the plane taxiing in to the parking bay.in a few moments your loved ones can call u on your cell. ask them to wait at arrivals. drive down in your car and pick them up.

at no other airport i have this convenience. thats why i love chennai airport.

especially useful to people expecting their bosses by the incoming flight.

you can get a good view of takeoffs from this point too.

Southern India - Chennai.

" NAMASTE"

This was the first scene that I captured as I left the airport... I took Air India this time around.. and the airport authorities were pretty slack as when we tried to open the door to enter the airport... it was locked!! And here we were at the tarmac banging at the door trying to get someone's attention .. *well... some of the other passengers at least*.. we got an officials attention 10 mins later and got thru.. quite funny actually...

Had this shot from the cab... rows and rows of pots up on sale...
