Trip to Chennai in January 2009

by m.shamila

I am planning to make a trip to Chennai in early January.
Looking for a reasonably priced guest house. Budget around Rs.500 per day
Checked on the SMK Guest House in Anna Salai.
Anybody can tell me how is the place.
Going with family so looking for a safe place.

Now a days 500 Rupees a day is not enough for a female to stay in a decent uest house or a lodge9assuming you are a lady).Assuming that you get one, it woud be far away from the city or on the outskirts of the city.
Not sure of SMK guest house in Anna salai unless you say the exact location of the guest house as Anna ssalai is a very long road.

There seems to be one around your budget in Triplicane area if that serves the purpose.

To recommend a suitable area for acommodation,it is needed to know in which area you have your work-like visiting a University or frinds etc..
Better to choose accommodation nearer to the place of your work.

It is said to be behind the devi theater. Not so sure about the exact location.
Main objective is to move around the city and nearby beach.
Safety is the utmost thing.
Can I have the name of the one in Triplicane?
Just looking for a moderate accomodation but safe.
Its going to be a 7 days trip only.
4 adults and 1 child so looking for a guest house more to say.
Appreciate your comments/advice.

Hello there,

When I was in Chennai last month I stayed at Hotel Melody in Vepery area, near Purasawalkam and with close proximity to the Central Railway Station. It cost me 450 Rupees per day, not with AC but fan is working well though. It is pretty much spacious for a family of 3 or 4, safe, quite and not that far from beaches and some major points of interests like Moore Market and the Government Museum.

Hotel Melody
281 Purasawalkam High Road
Vepery, Chennai
Tel. 91-44-26427201-6

Directions: Near the Doventon flyover opposite Roxy Theater.

Hope it helps. I have pics of the place if you want. Enjoy your holiday!

Travel Tips for Chennai (Madras)

Puja Offerings

by Canadienne

One of the essential parts of Hindu worship is puja ~ items are often offered to the gods as part of this prayer ritual. Typically, most of the offering is kept and a small token blessed and returned (a process that is officiated by the temple priests).

The items given vary from area to area (and are sometimes based on the traditional preferences of the god). You can always find stalls of puja items near temples. . .and garlands of flowers are always a popular choice.

Traffic
Traffic in the city...

by chanakya

Traffic
Traffic in the city has, of late, turned unruly. So, if you are motoring down the streets, don't be surprised if pedestrians dart across without warning or motorists overtake from the wrong side.
Public Transport ( buses )
If you are looking at economical public transport, the In-city Bus service and the suburban Trains will prove ideal. But here again, this is only as long as you avoid the morning and evening rush hours.

Autorickshaws
Be warned - autorickshaw drivers here will demand more than the metered rate without batting an eyelid. At all times enter the autorickshaw only after you and the driver are in agreement as to what the fare should be (metered rate, a fixed sum or metered rate plus a few rupees extra). As much as possible, it is always better to hail a moving and vacant autorickshaw, than to try and pick one from a stand.

SANTHOME CATHEDRAL

by undisputed

Built in 1504 and rebuilt in 1608 and 1893, the cathedral is said to house the remains of Apostle St. Thomas. The basilica has an enormous stained glass window and a beautiful one-meter statue of Virgin Mary that was brought from Portugal in 1543.

St George's Cathedral

by Willettsworld

This lovely cathedral was built in 1815 and consecrated the following year by the Rt. Rev. Thomas Fanshaw Middleton, the first Bishop of the Diocese of Calcutta, the only Anglican Diocese in India at that time. It is stated that the church was completed by the people themselves with the aid of a lottery fund. It cost 41,709 pagodas: furniture, the organ and the architect’s commission increased the cost to 57,225 pagodas where 1 Pagoda was the equivalent to 3.50 Indian Rupees.

The British East India Company's Senior Engineer Col. J.L. Caldwell designed the church, and his assistant Captain De Havilland finished the construction. It's well known for its stained-glass windows and memorials, tablets and statues.

Fort St George Museum

by Willettsworld

The Fort St George Museum exhibits items of British rule in The Exchange Building that was built in 1795. It first housed the office of the Madras Bank while the hall upstairs was the Public Exchange Hall and served as a place for public meetings, lottery draws and occasionally for entertainment. The idea of setting up a museum in this building to house relics of the British Raj was mooted in 1946 and the museum then opened in 1948. The objects on display in the museum include weapons, coins, porcelain, silverware, medals, uniforms and other artefacts from Britain, France and India. Original letters written by Robert Clive and Cornwallis make fascinating reading.
