Shopping for Sarees

by SriLankaEnjoy

I'll be coming to Chennai to do Saree shopping and need advice on the best area to shop and Good hotels in that area.(3 star) What are the main shopping malls or areas generally in Chennai?

Re: Shopping for Sarees

by bungi333

The best place to do saree shopping would be in T. Nagar. I personally prefer Nalli's. There are a couple of their shops in T. Nagar.

You can try the Southern Crest on Venkatnarayana Road (which would be the closest to the shopping area), or Hotel Sakithyan that's just off Venkatnarayana Road. The Residency on G.N. Chetty Road is also of good repute, and that isn't too far away either.

If you are looking to shop for other things, you can check out Spencer Plaza on Mount Rd.

Travel Tips for Chennai (Madras)

autorickshaws

by 6aruna

even though places in chennai are well connected by buses, for short distances autorickshaws are the basic mode of transport .The minimum fare charged is Rs 30/-that is for locals .If they smell that you are a tourist the charge is usually plus 20.so enquire.
But unlike in other places they take you straight to your destination and can be good company.

Handicrafts and textiles galore

by IoannaE about Kalpa Druma

Kalpa Druma is situated across from the Chola Sheraton and features home textiles and handicrafts, so obviously it caters mainly to tourists. That said, the variety and quality of both home furnishings and textiles is superb, and the location is convenient, so it's worth visiting. I found a beautiful Orissa ikat silk sari for 4800 rupees - a normal price for India, I think, and certainly not cheap, but a very good price to pay for 5,5 meters of pure silk with a beautiful design! Also purchased Bengali-style jewellery, cushion covers and handbags. Everything from saris to shawls to tablecloths. Expensive for India, reasonable if you're coming from Europe.

Eclectic International

by tayloretc about Cornucopia

This place has very good food with very good service, although the atmosphere leaves something to be desired. It’s Spartan (the woman I went with remarked that after all this time, now there were pictures on the walls), and a little darker than I’d usually like. And there’s almost no parking.

Did I mention the food is very good? It really is. And portions were perfect. I had lamb (in a sweet and spicy-but-not-too-spicy dark sauce made with filter coffee and rum) with rice and vegetables (steamed! not mush!), and mud pie for desert; my lunch companion had vegetables and rice, and caramel crème and orange sauce for desert. She says her husband speaks highly of the steaks, too. It's about equal veg and non-veg, with creative dishes either way.

Kapaleeshwarar Temple

by illumina

The Kapaleeshwar Temple is possibly the oldest temple in the city and is located in the Mylapore district of Chennai. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Kapaleeshwar Temple is characteristic of the Dravidian architectural style with its elaborate and intricately carved Gopuram, mandapams and a tank. You can find fragments of inscriptions dating back to 1250 AD. It is believed to have been built by the ruling Pallava dynasty around the 8th century AD, but may have been destroyed by the Portuguese and rebuilt by the Vijayanagar kings during the 16th century.

On arrival at the airport

by Dkewl

First thing when you arrive at the airport, there will be guys helping out to carry your luggages from the belt to the trolleys. Just tell them nicely you're not interested by waving your hand or saying no. Cuz once they do that, they'll expect tips of any currency. Its no big deal though for the carrying of your own luggages for a distance less than 2metres ya` Got it? Well, don't give any tips unless they do their work for any instance, sure ya why? Cuz, they'll take the tips and leave you without the thing that you expect them to do. Its about integrity. Happy holidays!
