Staring
by tayloretc
Be prepared for being stared at, especially if you're fair. No harm is meant, it's mostly curiosity. Although I've had enough little kids stop and stare wide-eyed and drop-jawed that I'm tempted to wear a little sign saying "Homo sapiens, northern variety. Do not feed chilies." Most everyone is very friendly, though, given the chance. Smile back, you'll be rewarded.

Using a student card, I received nearly 75 % train fare from Madras Terminal to New Delhi. What I can recall, I'm paying US $8.00 for ride two days and one night in the train. Remember, the train name *Golden Arrow*, may be no more inservice now.
Children's Park
by tayloretc
This large park is a welcome respite from the traffic and dust of the city. It’s shady, with playgrounds and picnic areas. There’s also a kind of zoo, or at least there are animals in enclosures. There are snack stalls outside, and it looks like you bring your own lunch in.
Entrance fee is Rs5 for adults, additional for cameras or video cameras.
Ramakrishna Mutt Temple
by Willettsworld
This temple, located just down the road from the Kapaleeshwarar Temple in southern Chennai, is dedicated to Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, one of the great religious leaders of India. A unique feature of the temple is that anyone who wants to enter can do so irrespective of religion, colour, creed or sex. The devotees who visit the shrine can take part in the worship, bhajan, aarti and also engage themselves in silent prayer or meditation.
The temple has an imposing 60ft wide entrance gateway designed in pure Vijayanagara Style but it also utilizes architectural elements found in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain temples and the churches of Europe. The prayer hall of the temple is about 10ft high from the ground level.
Open: 4.30-11.45am & 3-9pm.
