The Park Chennai
601 Anna Salai, Chennai (Madras), Tamil Nadu, 600 006, India
Welcome to Fawlty Towers.......
During this stay c/in 28th Nov c/o 2nd Dec one of our worst experiences to date. We travel a lot and normally choose the best property in town to ensure best service & facilities for my family we decided to go back to The Park having stayed there earlier and enjoyed it but this time was anything but enjoyable...
Day 1 - Called up the hotel to make a booking apparently no rooms but my secretary managed to get a room at the same time online, understandable but still inconvenient.
-After the bookings done at 9am call the hotel and get connected to the director of rooms who happens to be very arrogant on the phone and requested for adjoining high floor rooms with a baby crib in one. Ask for executive rooms if possible for an additional charge but as per him this category of rooms is all over the property so does not guarantee a high floor. Also we ask what would be an ideal time to c/in and very arrogantly I get a reply that c/in time is 12pm and rooms would be ready than.
-We arrive at 3.30pm and still rooms are not ready. Than we get these rooms around 4.30pm on the 2nd floor not adjoining no baby crib, we ask for executive floor on charge but apparently cannot get it as only the 7th & 8th floor are assigned but very contradictory to what the rooms director Varun told me on the phone. So we move in to the 2nd floor rooms temporarily, phones don’t work there and miss 3 business calls thanks to that!!!!
-Anyway we ask for a higher floor and are promised the same, after an hour come down to check and meet Visant (Duty Manager) who assures all will be sorted and in place. But then come across Varun who very arrogantly advices me that he is the DIRECTOR OF ROOMS and he knows best and no good rooms are available and so on. And will try to get rooms on the 5th floor but still don’t hear for an hour and as the phones are not working call back to the hotel via cell only to be arrogantly advised again by Varun that we will check so again come down and then someone is sent…..at last at 6pm we check in….
- In our room now and ask for someone to come and get our baby bottles sterilised and still waiting after ½ an hour for the right department to sort it as already 2 guys have come through and at last someone from pvt dining is sent.
Day 2 - No hot water in the room, when asked how we sort it out we are asked to call guest services and we get hot water delivered in BUCKETS...5 star hotel!!!!!!!!
- No turn down service both day 1 & 2 so call again and than its done.
-Go to the pool no attendents after 30mins someone shows up again very indifferent have to ask for towels,no water offered...nothing....we clean our bed with a towel ourselves as it had rained and try to enjoy...
Day 3 - Order food via room service for my son, takes them 2 hrs to deliver!!!!!. Call the SPA to book a treatment no one picks up, after leaving 4 msg's with guest services no one comes back so miss out on it.
This was our 4th stay in this property and the property has gone to the dumps literally in the last year. All bathroom fixtures are rusted, paint peeling off, etc.
Attitude of the team from being friendly & courteous has gone to indifference. Not surprising after meeting the Director of rooms (Asst. GM) when we asked him that we would like to meet the GM are told that in case it’s to complain he is very busy with back to back meetings and won’t be able to meet him which actually happened even after we left a msg with his sec, as well sent a mail to him during our stay!!!!!!!! and for all this we paid almost $250 per night per room for 2 rooms for 3 nights!!!!!!!!!!!!Stay away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Five Stars, indian style
Full disclosure: i didn't actually stay at the Park - I was too cheap for that. But many of my friends did (a dozen of them), so I ended up spending a lot of time there.
It's overdesigned (the toilets in the lobby are a case in point - great design unless you actually have to use them) and yet bland, like most five-stars can be. There's nothing to remind you you're in India except for the film posters on the wall. As is often the case in India, the hotel seems older than it is. Service can be erratic. You can't use the pool beyond 8 pm or so - why? - and there's no alcohol after 11 pm (after that it's room service only - to be fair, this is a city law). The hotel shop, much advertised in their website, was never open when I was there - you had to ask them to open it!
The location is convenient for central Madras -in the thick of the biggest traffic intersection - but no one would call it beautiful. The restaurants are good and offer enough variety (indian food, pasta, good breakfasts, etc).
Unique Quality: Rooftop pool, business centre, 'indian films' theme.

Most Hip Hotel in Town
The Park occupies the former location of Gemini Film Studios, which produced many classic Indian films. As a result, a cinematic theme underscores this posh and sophisticated new hotel. The elegant atrium lobby features two large suspended movie screens that show popular movies in the evenings (although without sound). Classic and modern Bollywood posters adorn the hallways, guestrooms and even bathrooms.
This hotel is definitely world-class, with all the luxuries and amenities you could need. The rooms are comfortable and tastefully appointed. The staff is friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet features quite decent south Indian cuisine along with international fare. The location is also quite good, in the commercial heart of the city. This place certainly does justify its rather high cost.
Unique Quality: The Leather Bar in the Park is certainly THE place to be seen for the young and wealthy in Chennai. Currently the hippest nightspot in town.
More about The Park Chennai
Damp, mouldy and seen better days
The Park Chennai looks impressive when you drive up to it, the reception staff make you feel valued, particularly if you are a Starwood cardholder, but the hotel goes down hill as soon as you leave reception. The corridors have old, tired and damp smelling carpets. The Executive room I had smelt damp, the bathroom was dirty and the extractor fan in the bathroom didn't work. This gave the overall room a damp and mouldy smell. The staff were keen to point out the leather, electric massage chair in every room - there were far more important features to fix in the hotel than this. The Executive Club on the "27th Floor" (actually around the sixth floor), was not bad and the finger food served with the complimentary drinks was good enough. Breakfast was standard Western fare. Unlike other reviewers the bed was comfortable and the sheets clean and dry. Overall not very good value for money, but not totally dire.
Hotel got better through the stay
Travelled to Chennai on Business with two colleges and stayed at the Park for a week. The positives are that it is a nice hotel with good food, very nice pool and fairly busy (if very dark) bar area. We stayed all week and not one of us had a bad stomack - big plus.
The large evening bar bill may have helped kill off any bugs. Be very careful about drinking wine in any hotel in Chennai, basic cost is high, double what we'd expect from decent UK hotel and then there is an extra 73% tax making the bill extremely high, stick with the beer.
The rooms are small for 4/5 star delux rooms. All three of us felt that the sheets were musty. One college didn't think their bathroom was that clean.
The hotel has a good location and is very good value for money. Traffic noise anywhere in Chennai will be heard, all vehicles use their horns as much as their brakes, traffic is just amazing, rush hour should be avoided, its much worse than many capital cities I've visited.
The hotel air-con is a bit too cool for my liking, but there is a nice patio area off the reception near the bar, great for a late drink on a warm evening.
I started off not liking the hotel, but the good food and reasonable atmosphere brought me round. Service was very good except for the speed of delivering drinks by pool was slow.
If you want a bit more pampering then try the Coromandel just down the road, but it costs more. Also recommended to me was the Residency Towers (great roof top restaurant and one of the best bars), may try this next time.
Bollywood Boutique Hotel
I stayed here on a very short layover in Chenai. After a very long flight, the room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The hotel has a unique concept: Boutique hotel with a Bollywood feel. There are posters from older Bollywood movies in all the rooms and throughout the hotel. I'd definately stay here again.
Damp And Smelly Rooms
Myself and a collegue stayed at this hotel on a business trip. The outside of the hotel and the reception look very modern and the hotel looks recently built. However the rooms were appauling. The smell of mold hits you as you walk through the door. The paint was crumbling in the bathroom and had obviously been painted over. The room was very dirty and the floor was badly scratched and the rugs filthy. The worst was the beds- the bed was so soft that your body sank into it and the sheets were so damp that I couldn't sleep in them- I ended up sleeping in my clothes on top of the bed. The hotel was also very noisy. This is postively the worst place I have ever stayed in and would strongly recommend that you don't stay here unless you want to become ill. Having spoken since to other collegues working in India, they say that they have complained several times but the hotel has not improved at all and now will never stay there.
Bad service - rooms damp!
Room not ready on arrival even though it was pre-booked and it was after 6pm. Bathroom wall was damp, only 1 bathrobe for double occupancy, had to request twice to get enough towels and a 2nd robe. Bathroom amenities were missing on the 1st night and mini bar had not been replenished. No non-smoking areas in bars or lobby! Spa, pool and gym were excellent though - but don't stay here for the rooms unless you have no other choice
Trendy, but Toxic
The hotel couldn't find our reservation, even though we paid for and reserved our room on the hotel website. Suite was moldy smelling, broken marble tile in shower, no CD player to mask the loud honking horns outside the room, construction banging going on the floor above. The lounges reaked of smoke, and the downstairs lobby filled with smoke from the "health bar" . Hallways smelled of terrible toxic fumes that made us sick. We called to speak to the manager, he never returned our call. Only nice experience was getting a massage in their serene spa, where they had soft music playing to mask the traffic sounds.
