Idyllic setting but that's where the nice part ends. The hygiene is frightening. They recycle the massage oil. The enema tubes dangle on the floor of the shower rooms. The owners are in it for maximum profit. Very bad energy. Yoga classes are taught mostly by students and not the experts. There are much better yoga retreats.
The staff members are horribly exploited by the owners but in spite of that are wonderful, friendly and helpful.

I stayed at this retreat just over a year ago. The owners are very sweet on the surface as long as you dont bother them. There was a girl from the uk who wanted to go home early. We heard terrible fights coming from the office. There were endless tensions and problems. The husband and wife always had family problems and tried to involve the guests into their issues. It was difficult to exticate yourself from them. That was not why i was half- way across the world. Any time someone questioned an action or a decision we were met with emotional blackmail and tears. The family are in it for the money and are complete phonies. People come with such high hopes- and I met a couple of amazing people who made the best of it and left happy. I am not such an enlightened soul -I learnt a lot from the grossly underpaid overworked staff.
Do your research. The website is a pro job to hook in westerners

Here’s the thing about places called rest houses and guest houses in Tamil Nadu. Many of them are actually kept for government officials, and in many places government officials take priority over everyone else; even if the place is empty, if you don’t call at least a day in advance to make a reservation, you can’t stay, because a government official might show up unannounced. In more tourist-oriented places and near pilgrimage centers it might still be possible to get a room with some persistence and maybe a few rupees extra (and name-dropping doesn’t hurt). In the more out-of-the-way places, be prepared to backtrack to the regional office or spend some time on the phone getting permission from some local authority (in Tamil).
The prices are very low, but the rooms can vary wildly in quality and maintenance. In one place I stayed, the room was worn but passably clean; in another, there were half a dozen large frogs living in the bathroom. (Interestingly, that otherwise entirely empty place was one of the hardest to arrange a room at.)

More reliable than government rest or guest houses, but you still need to book or call in advance or it’s likely you won’t get a room. These tend to be larger buildings or complexes that cater to tourists and pilgrims, located in more popular destinations, and range wildly in quality and maintenance.

This place is located at Tranquebar which is about 50kms away from Nagapattinam... the place is a bit expensive because it is a Heritage Hotel... but it's worth every rupee...the bungalow is on the beach which is mostly to yourself... the food at the hotel is amazing... lovely French food... ask for the local fish preparations...chettinand style...
this location used to be a Dutch colony in the 1600's for pepper trading... all the surroundings date back to that era and are in full functional use today!!! some interesting buildings and architecture...
not too much to do... but a lovely place to relax and soak in the beauty of the beach and the place...
the bungalow has been done up to recreate a by gone era... superb hospitality... amazing views from the bungalow
