Kanchipuram
Kanchipuram is known as one of India's seven sacred cities. Kanchipuram was the historical capital of the Pallavas of South India. It was under the Pallavas from 6th to 8th century A.D. and later became the citadel of the Cholas, Vijaynagar kings, the Muslims, and the British. It has been a centre of Tamil learning, culture and religious background for centuries. The history of Kanchipuram goes back to more than 3000 years. Kanchi has magnificent temples of unique architectural beauty bearing eloquent testimony to its glorious Dravidian heritage. Adi Shankaracharya established his Episcopal seat (Kamkotipeetam) in Kanchipuram.
Kanchipuram has Ekambareshwarar Temple which is believed to be more than 2500 years old. It has evidence of being renovated by the Pallavas, the Cholas and the Vijaynagar kings. Other place to see Kamakshi Amman Temple and Varadarajar Temple.
