We are planning to visit Kodaikkanal by last week of July or first week of August.. Will the weather be totally rainy??
Which hotel or cottage is better to stay
Just google search on the website regarding the weather.The monsoons have set in but cant be sure until the day.it is pure chance.however regarding your question on hotel or cottage,it depends on what you are looking for,cottages offer you privacy and may work out cheaper,hotels have the convinience of location,food and security.

July and Aug are off season(rainy) in Kodai. You may not have continuous rain but you will have intermitant showers. Now the weather is changing, all depends on your luck!
There are lots of hotels and cottages to stay and depends on your budget. The best one, though pricy, is Carlton Hotel in my opinion.Superb view of the lake,it has gym,indoor games etc etc.
So far the rains have failed, so this question is dicey! Having said that, it is now off season, and all the hotels offer 50% discount. Choose one near the lake which is the best location. Carlton is 5 star, other wise there is J residency, Sterling, the Kodaikanal Club and some others. You can also get TTDC run Hotel Tamil Nadu which has a valley view. Check tamilnadutourism.org for online availability.

* Clothing - light woolen in the evening during summer and heavy woolen during winter.
* Creams - Carry some creams as per your needs as the climate is dry leading to dry lips and skin.
