 | Royal Court: Excellent Hotel

Thoroughly dissatisfied with the Madurai Residency after one night, I went looking for a hotel that seemed better. I walked for about an hour, here and there, and suddenly happened upon the Royal Court. I asked a desk clerk if a room was available. He said there was and offered to show it to me. I liked what I saw and booked it. The hotel then provided a van, driver, and assistant to drive me to the Residency, wait while I packed my belongings, and then drive me back to the Royal Court. My room was super-comfortable, with safe and TV and a good-sized shower and bathroom. The restaurant, with complimentary breakfast, served mostly South Indian food, but there were eggs (boiled or scrambled) for breakfast and a good variety of dishes at the lunch and dinner buffets. On the other hand, the roof-top restaurant, The Mughal, was a big disappointment. Service was slow and the tandoori chicken was not very good. Owned, managed, and staffed by Muslims in this most Hindu of cities, the hotel seemed to host mostly Muslim guests.
On West Veli St, a short walk from Town Hall Rd and only a 20-minute stroll from the fabulous Sri Meenakshi temple. I've never encountered a more friendly or helpful hotel staff.
