Temple Bay is just about the best place I’ve stayed, ever, anywhere.
Granted, I don’t usually travel first class, so I don’t have a lot to compare it with. Here goes a description, though. The grounds are stunning and immaculately kept, and are set back from the road, so it’s quiet and peaceful. The rooms are tasteful and comfortable (and some are much more luxurious than mine was), and mine had a perfect view of the Shore Temple from the comfortable chairs on the balcony. The onsite restaurants were excellent. And the service was about as perfect as you can get – one step down from someone reading your mind and producing what you want before you ask. It’s located on the northern edge of town, within easy walking of the sites either along the beach (through fishing boats) or the main road (through the town).
If I have any complaint it’s that the fan was noisier than I’d have liked. I can barely call that a fault, though – it sounded like it just needed some oil.

Can walk in usully but its always safe booking before you reach.
If its not beach resort ,many small hotels are there.
Does anyone know the beaches around Mahabalipuram? In particular does anyone have any advice on places to stay
What would you like to know about beaches in Mahabalpuram? It is not advisable to swim in the beaches there due to strong under current.
There ar very nice hotels and beaches located at the rear of these hotels are clean and you can spend the evening having your drinks and dinner on the beach!
Ofcourse you can play volleyball or some such sports and is a perfect place to do do excercise early in the morning facing the sea.Or you can see beautiful sunrise!
There are many hotels both inside and just outside of Mahabalipuram.The hotel resorts that are just outside of Mahabalipuram(about 3-5kms from Mahabalipuram) are from USDolars 50 to 200.
If you are on a budget,there are lots of gueshouses in Mahabalipuram starting from USDollars10.

Thank you, it all sounds wonderful (except the strong under current) I would like to work my way down this coast but if there is nowhere to swim I may look further along.
My budget isn’t too tight (but I would prefer $20 a night to $200 :-)
