RAMESHWARAMS best with a view and ample ground

We visited Rameshwaram in the 2nd week of July, the sun was smiling no sign of clouds. Enough tourists especially Hindi speaking ones. Booked the Hotel from Hyderabad TTDC office , on the website price was 550 and its +100 more when i actually booked + taxes when u check out from hotel. Remember the check out time is 12.00 noon. I had to pay half room price to stay till evening becoz thats when the train to chennai was. The lunch rather MEALS (rs. 65) was ok, they charged rs. 30 for my daughter . Not great but better stuff than what u get in the restaurants near the temple. IF you are chappathi types you can check out the north indian joints near the west entrance, hot chappathis with two curries for rs.40.
What i like best about the place is it is facing the sea and you can only hear the howl of the wind and nothing else. Its quite peaceful unlike the hotels near to th temple where most of the time you can sounds of the vehicles lot of traffic. The most memorable was the visit to Danushkodi, there is a bus from west entrance at 2.00 pm charges are less . In danushkodi to travel to the tip to see the Rama sethu u need to take the mini open top van they charged us 145 per head for 11 people, it was worth it.

Unique Quality: lot of space outside, lot of greenery and peaceful. Great view if u are given 1st floor even otherwise u have a great view. Front offie very helpful,

TTDC, Rameswaram

This trip is pretty good for someone who is not in the mood of taking a busy tour, or seeing too much of something. If you're a pilgrim, this is the best place to visit, no doubt about it; but as a tourist, i would say, don't go by the advertisements and pamflets about Rameswaram....they are rubbish. Sita Kund, Ram Kund, Laxman kund, and so many Teerthams actually have nothing in them. Only if you're a staunch follower of Hinduism and believe every bit of Ramayana and things like that will you like (or rather, love) visiting these places.
If you're planning to opt for a cheap but nice hotel, go for TTDC. As always, it has the best location i.e. next to the beautiful blue sea as well as the main temple(which is worth visiting for its 1000 pillared hall, the longest in Asia).
For non-veg food-lovers:::::::Nevvvver go to Rameswaram, there is no proper restaurants there and the only food you get is dosa, idli, rasam, sambhar, vada and uttapam!! If you want to have good non-veg food, you better have it in your dreams, beacause, in reality, there are only 2 non-veg restaurants----Hotel Prakash and something else in the main city----there too the only chicken you get is curry, chilli and 65. Only mutton----curry.Only fish----fried.

The rooms of TTDC are "just good" but nothing too great. (Rs.700{Non-ac};Rs.1000({Ac}). Clostrophobians, do not stay there....you are requested not to open the only 2 windows in you room because of the mosquitoes that would haunt your room whenever they get the opportunity to do so. However, we had left them open, and not many of them bothered us much.TTDC has a fixed lunch menu(Buffet--Rs.65) but you can order Gobi 65 additionally.
For dinner you may have finger chips(Mind u, do not ask for fried potatoes...they will get you something horrible).

Unique Quality: None. May be the glass-bottom boat was a good one (Rs. 400)
The thousand pillared hall with 1000 carved pillars, was something out of the ordinary.
Um....nothing else...actually, outstanding things are not required to attract pilgrims; they would flock to places as long as they are religiously significant, which Rameswaram is.

Decent Basics

This one isn't too bad for the (low) price. It's a large complex, and a lot of tourists come through, so it's maintained better than some others. Rooms are small, passably clean (but don't look too hard), and everything worked. Try to get a room in the 400-600 block (? the ones behind the restaurant). The ones on the upper floors have open common terraces with gorgeous views of the sea (my sunrise at Rameswaram photo was taken from one of them). You can eat up there, too, and, if you don’t make a fuss, drag a mattress out to sleep under the stars. The restaurant is okay.

Book in advance, it's almost always full. We arrived unannounced, and the guy at the desk made us sweat it out, and then happily accepted a bonus when a room “became free.”
