YWCA: Cheap and friendly

The YWCA hostel is a pleasant place to stay and they will happily accomodate men and women

An old colonial style building.

Toda Huts: Staying in a Toda Village

We stayed overnight in the Toda village; our group was divided into three huts, with either spots on the floor or on "beds" of rock. I had chosen not to travel to India with a sleeping bag, and did not regret it for all but one night of the trip. . .this was the night I had wished I had something for additional warmth.

Temperatures in the Nilgiri Hills drop to zero in winter evenings ~ the huts are not heated overnight ~ and rock beds do not conserve heat. It was a terribly long night.

The benefit of being half-awake most of the night meant that I was up early in the morning, with the first stirrings of our Toda hut-mates. The fire was put on as soon as they were awake, to begin food preparations, and I took advantage of the opportunity with one of my tourmates to go out for a walk in the hilly areas that we hadn't explored the day before.
