Agra - train ticket

by marieana

hi there
I would like to know if it would be easy to get a train ticket for the TAj
Would like to reach the site by this Bhopal train from New delhi and be there by 7.55, have you heard anything about it? Now do I need to book a ticket on IRCTC, has anyone done this?Is it possible to buy ticket the day before leaving for the Taj?
so many questions, I know but doing this trip in a day just needs some organnisation
thx

There is an express train called Shatabi Express that leaves Delhi at 6am. It reaches Agra at about 8.3oam. Booking can be done online, or go to any travel agency. Ticket can also be bought at station, but best to pre-book. Shatabi has coach-seats and is air-conditioned. There is a return trip from Agra, which I think leaves Agra around 6pm. (wehn buying your ticket, get a return ticket)
An alternative is to hire a car and driver. Cost will be between R900 and R1,100. BEWARE OF TOUTS AT TAJ MAHAL. They are extremely aggressive. Take a cycle-rickshaw to the gate of Taj Mahal to avoid them.
While in Agra, visit the interesting ancient city of Fatehpur Sikri. It is only 20 mins away from Agra by taxi. Spend one night in Agra if possible, and see the Taj in the early morning. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays.
For more info on these two places, see the links on my home page.

Mariana that Shatabi Express is without a doubt the best train to catch.
The car cost would be one way.

We hired a car & driver to get to Agra- driver also took us to Fatehpur Sikri and a few other small villages along the way. He then dropped us back in Delhi at 10pm

We paid R4,500 (for 2) but I am sure that a better price could be negotiated.
The train is cheapest, fastest and safest way to go.
The traffic along the way is horrendous.

PS There are other trains going to Agra, that might leave Delhi around midnight or so- but they stop so often and are so slow that the Shatabi is a better option.

Go on irctc.com and book. It will show you every train from Bhopal to Agra and how many seats are availble. It's easy and it works. Make sure you check the tatkal box on the reservation page so you can use a tourist quota seat, you will be able to get on trains that appear full this way.

Taj Mahal - worth dressing up for

by Tracyden

We didn't realise that the Taj Mahal trip included a complementary photo from our tour guide. Consequently we toddled along in our day trekking about wear and probably ruined the group photo - sorry fellow Golden trianglers.

I still like our couple photo though - very romantic. xxx

Big Game Safari...

by kenmerk

Long ago when I was young and poor, I used to travel about with only one backpack, which I could easily carry myself....

I'm afraid those days are long gone, tho'... Now my holidays look more like a Big Safari Expedition (especially if there is some scuba diving on the itinerary....) This usually drives the need to a local team of Sherpas to help carry the load....

And you should check out work that these porters do in the train stations here. (they usually got bright red shirts on....) Some of them got over 50 kgs of bags on their head, and can still race up and down the stairs, dodging cows, beggars, and tourist all the way... (and all for about 10 Rs (or $0.25 USD) a bag...)

Executive Tours - Mr. Nadeem Khan

by pchamlis

My plan for our trip to India was to basically plan it myself. I subcontracted with Gatik Eventures of Delhi (see my India tips) and Mr. Navin Pandey for driver services and for city guides. The company that Gatik selected to provide this service in Agra (and for Fatehpur Sikri as well) was Executive Tours of Agra. Executive's local representative was Mr. Nadeem Khan.

Nadeem was a terrific person. He showed up at our hotel shortly after our arrival to finalize local guide plans for our stay. He also hired and introduced us to Rajiv Rajawat, who provided the actual guide services. During our entire stay, I had a couple more calls and one more in person visit from Nadeem, just to make sure that we were being taken care of and that our expecatations were being met. All in all, top notch service.

If anyone is looking for local host and guide services information in Agra, Fatehpur Sikri or probably anywhere in the Uttar Pradesh state, I'd send Nadeem an email or give him a call. You'll be well taken care of. And worry not, if you're like me and really want to run things yourself, they're going to take your cue. This is not a situation where they give you a schedule, Nadeem shows up and says, what do you want to do and when do you want to do it, we're here to make it happen.

put your shoes outside

by ukirsari

remove your shoes and put it outside before entering worshipers' places like mosques and temples. and do not forget when entering Taj Mahal. it's became a mandatory: you have to put your shoes in front office [cellphone also not allowed]. but if you feel lazy enough to open, you can rent a pairs of shoes' covers --like the red ones which covers this guy's shoes in my picture.
