Rajmahal Hotel: A 2/3 hotel

This was a 2/3 star hotel which offered reasonable accommodation in fairly stark surroundings. Breakfast was OK.

Shri Ram Guest House: Checks all boxes

The best thing about this place is that it checks all of the boxes. When you arrive at night a bit tired and squished from the local bus that dropped you to yet another new city on your long journey, it is good to know of a place that can meet all needs. This place is:
1. clean
2. close to all attractions like Taj or Jama Masjid
3. only Rs300 for a single person in a non-AC room with attached bath
4. 24hr checkout

Some things to watch out for:
1. avoid the rooms facing the front unless you don't mind listening to a bit of road traffic
2. lots of shops nearby for all needs because it is close to a bus stand, but do not eat at the nearby dhabas. You will thank me later.

sai palace: sai palace( tajview rooms and restaurant)

We travelled to Agra and stayed one night at this hotel. We are travelling with 2 young children aged 19and 22. Hotel is in the centre of all the action and so very close to the gates for the Taj Mahal. This hotel also has very good views of the Taj from the roof top terrace(tajview rooms) which serves very good food (breakfast, lunch and dinner) or even better for just a drink to watch the sun go down. . We booked two rooms due to the size of our family but found the rooms to be of an adequate size - compared to another hotel we stayed at we had the best nights sleep here. Its also a great place to meet other fellow travellers.

Regent continental: Regent Continental

Room was clean but the outside area in Dehle is a hole. The noise is horrific at night. The breakfast is basic but edible. you dont feel safe when outside this hotel. You will get hassled once outside the door. The hotel told my tour that i had already booked out so i would go on one of their own tours.

Typical India !!

Good Hotels in Agra

At Agra I would recommend three hotels and they are Mogul Sheraton, Trident and Howard Park Plaza. They have good accommodation with good service. For budget tourists there are many more hotels in Agra.

Hotel Apollo: A budget hotel in Agra, on the way to Taj Mahal

We hired a driver and a car for a 2-night and 3-day trip to Agra (200 kms from Delhi) to see the famous Taj Mahal and some wonders of Jaipur in the county of Rajasthan. We were told that accommodation is included in the price in both destinations, and that we don't need to pay or take care of the driver/guide's accommodation nor food. So we actually bought a package tour to Agra and Jaipur.

We didn't participate in choosing the hotels (and we didn't even know the areas so we trusted the people in the "tourist information" which actually was an Indian upmarket travel agency.)

The room was small, it looked like the bed linen were all very old. The whole room seemed somewhat smudged. Perhaps they couldn't afford better; I don't know. I wouldn't have chosen this hotel; but it is surely cheap and good for just to pass by e.g. when interrailing and on a low budget.

A waiter of the hotel bar wanted to offer a glass or two of whisky to my husband as he got so rare visitors.

The waiter also showed us the way to the unfinished building next door, up there were chairs in the roof - and a wonderful view to the mystical Taj Mahal!

Shyam Palace, Rashmi, shahajahan etc.: There are many budget hotels

Well there are many budget hotels in Tajganj, you can find a single room just for Rs. 150 - 300. They provide hot n cold water also with english comode. Don't listen to the brokers and auto drivers. Just go to Tajganj and go to 2/3 hotels and choose from them.

Tourist rest house: payable rooms with tv

We stayed in this place during our stay in Agra. We had a double room with TV and private bathroom and hot shower for 450 roepies. The place also had internet connections and a nice courtyard where you can have breakfast, lunch or candlelight dinner.
Rikshawdrivers might steer you away from this place because they don't do commissions;
One more reason to go to this place.
It's situated just in the middle of the train stations and Taj Ganj.

Budget Hotels

A lot of the budget and less expensive hotels are located in the Taj Ganj area. This is the area, close to the Taj Mahal, is where the skilled craftsmen who worked on building the Taj Mahal lived.

Trident Hilton Hotel

The hotel is comfortable and set amongst beautiful landscaped gardens. The foyer had a lovely lemony smell about it. Everything was very tastefully done, my only complaint was at night, where my room was located, it was very noisy with kids left to run up and down the corridors yelling.

Hotel Sidhartha: A Great Budget Accommodation - Taj View!

If you are budget travelling and plan on a one or two day stay in Agra, it doesn't get much better than Hotel Sidhartha. We had read the name in the Lonely Planet and came across it after a 1 minute walk from the Western gateway to the Taj complex.

A double room (with ensuite bathroom) costs 200 rupees. (about $4.00). The hotel also has a restaurant in a lovely quite courtyard. However, this is only for those who can handle very basic budget accommodation: expect bugs, grubby rooms and theiving monkeys.

The hotel is located right in the maze of winding streets that back up to the Taj Mahal walls and they are great to go wondering around in the evening and really take in "India".

To get a hotel with a "Taj View" you have to stay in one of the $200 per night large hotels on the hill overlooking Agra about 2 miles away from the Taj Mahal. To get a "Taj View" at the Hotel Sidhartha, all you have to do is climb up an old set of stairs onto the roof and you're right outside the complex wall. It is an absolutely incredible experience and well worth the very basic budget accommodation.

(see the picture for our spectacular view. You can't really get much closer - the red brick building is the south wall)
