Our room at Palace on Ganges (see balcony?) by lynnehamman, 3 more photos The hotel is situated at Assi Ghat, which is a 15 min walk along the ghats to get to the Dasaswamedh Ghat, which is where the evening Ganga Aarti is held every evening at sundown. Our room, which had a really comfortable bed & modern bathroom, also had a wonderful little marble-latticed balcony.......tiny, but fine for 2 people to sit on.The room was a good size, and spotless.Bedding was also colourful & ethnic, and there was a writing desk, & television. I also have to mention- CONSTANT supply of hot water. The hotel staff were helpful & unobtrusive, and the food in the dining room was superb......vegatarian mostly, but also some meat dishes. There is a musical trio that play music while you dine, and they were surprisingly good. We ate most of our meals there, but breakfast & lunches are served at a sunny patio style roof garden, filled with flowers. I really do recommend this hotel...........its very good value, and really stress-free.
Everywhere in the hotel, there are beautiful antiques, and wonderful works of art. The owner seemed to be a collector, and every day that we were there, we noticed something new.All the floors are marble, and beautiful chandeliers everywhere. We especially liked the communal balcony which runs the length of the hotel, all the rooms opened onto it. Lovely to catch a cool breeze., while having some refreshment. Fresh flowers in room each day. We liked the location of this hotel.............because it is away from most of the crowds, but do take care when walking back from main Ghats..........especially at night. Its dark, there is no lighting, and some unsavoury elements were hanging around. We had no problems, however But the very best thing about this hotel is the view.......unobstructed...of the Ganges river. So much happens on this river.........we loved just sitting on our balcony, and watching. The sunrise was magnificent, and at sunset the river glitters. I preferred the area that this hotel was situated in. Its away from the ghats, which get really noisy and crowded. Garden of Alka hotel by g72 The stay in hotel has been very beautiful but the outside was a jungle. When you enter in old Varanasi ( in the pedestrian zone, near the Gange )and wear sandals or slippers is better that you move out it because on the floor of the narrow lanes you will find more cow or dog or monkey or uman gifts.REMEMBER jump the cow.
The hotel is very clean and from the large balcony you can see the life of holy river. For a double room with a/c about 850Rps ( 2003 ) The hotel is located near the MEER Ghat Theme: HotelPrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: D. 3/23 Meerghat, VARANASI - 221 001 IndiaPhone: 328474 - 328445Directions: Arrive to the Alka Hotel the first time (and the second too) is very difficult. The hotel is overtakeable only on foot. The best way to Alka hotel is calling the hotel that come to pick up you or pay a rickshaw-man like guide ( and why not ,bearer ).Website: members.tripod.com/-hotelalka

Varanasi From Shanti. Pic: Aaron Irving by Hmmmm My first taste of India was Varanasi airport, and the cab ride in. Even though I was coming from Nepal it was FULL on. Varanasi airport was an experience and naturally the ride into town was frenetic - Negotiating the fare in the Old town with the rickshaw wallahs. Walking through the sticky hot and atmospheric alleys with our heavy bags full of winter clothes from Nepal. We followed the signs saying Shanti guest house, and teh kids yelling, "Shanti and Shanti guesthouse this way!" and pointing the way with their index fingers. Obviously, even without a Lonely Planet listing, they are still the most popular guesthouse in town. Eventually we got there. They said they had only one double. I looked at it, while my GF stayed 5 flights downstairs withte luggage. The room was definately the last room in the hotel. It was a terrible - windowless, grey, prison cell like, concrete box. After all the rigmarol all i wanted to do was get a room. the man said we do have a dormitory... I went up 2 more flights and the view BLEW my socks off. (the photo does not give it justice) Instantly I unilaterally took the room.
Train Booking office / Travel Agent Restaurant (that sells beer if you ask) A Internet Cafe Laundry Service Great Restaurant Lounge where it is EASY to meet other travellers. And one of the Worlds Best Urban Views. For only 30 rupees a night (0.80 cents). I loved this place. The only downer was the Monkey's outside the dormitory. They can Freak you out. You cannot keep the windows open least they come inside. He'll stop At the small alley that leads to the Ghat. Meander through the Warren. Follow teh signs saying Shanti Guesthouse. You'll eventually see it on your left.

by Rupanworld During my visit to Varanasi, I had booked a room with a family residing at Meer Ghat. That was a typically Varanasi household, a joint family composed of the individual family of three brothers, one of them looking after the food aspect and the other looking after the tours of the guests putting up with them. As a result, we not only had very good, home cooked Varanasi food like aloo parathas, mooli paratha, chawal, achar, daal, chutney, sabzi etc. (and believe me, no question of food poisoning) but also had the best bargains while making the tours around the city. And to add to it all, we always had a tour guide with us, sometimes in the form of one of those brothers (helping us move around the entire city), sometimes their wives (when we went for shopping) and even sometimes their kids, when we went to the ghats for bath. And this 'Guide' part of the trip was entirely free, we paid nothing for it. It was their pleasure to accompany us while we explored their city.
From the terrace of this guest house, there's a great view of the Ganga. The house is almost 250 years old and is a heritage in itself. For four day's stay (and fooding) for four persons we paid only Rupees 2200 (less than USD 48) Theme: Pension/GuesthousePrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: least expensiveAddress: Shankari Guest House near Meer GhatPhone: 05422392706

by l_joo If you want to stay cheap, I would recommend this place called Shiva Gangga Guset House located at Shivala Ghat. Room cost 100Rs, many foreign tourists stay here and the photo here is what you see while standing at the guest house. This guest house is probably local peoples' residential but turned into commercial usage, that's why it still look very original. Room was not that 5star with bathroom outside but for 100Rs, is good enough. I did not stay here, I stayed at Sunshine hotel near the main street. 200Rs room. Theme: Pension/Guesthouse

Of course, I didn't stay there, but it's nice to visit these big, expensive hotels and have a tea or coffee or even lunch. Taj Ganges Hotel looked very nice and quiet, the swimming pool was nice and tempting. The buffet food LOOKED good, but we had italian which sucked big time!
Great pool, nice gardens, mango grove Theme: HotelPrice: US$80-120 » Currency ConverterComparison: most expensiveAddress: Nadesar Palace Grounds, Varanasi 200 002

A very friendly, clean, relatively new hotel. The staff was very friendly. The food at the restaurant was also quite good. The only negative thing was the brigade of mosquitos in our room. They killed me! They even penetrated the 2mm thick antimosquito repellent that I spread for 30 mins all over my skin. Bring lots of mosquito coils. (UPDATE: I visited Shivam Hotel again this year 2004 and it is kinda deteriorating. Mosquitos seem to have multiplied! It is not my best choice anymore. 600 /- for a double room is not a good bargain when Surya is charging 495 for a MUCH BETTER situation. Read relevant tip)
Somewhat clean, friendly, good service... Very nice food. Theme: HotelPrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageDirections: Close to the train station

by l_joo This hotel is directly looking at the Gangga river but room cost beyond my budget, but since I was here asking the price, why not upload to share. The cost is 1500Rs per room, grand looking but not for me. Picture is the staircase walking up to the hotel. http://www.indiamike.com/india/archive/index.php/t-2216.html For more hotels information of Varanasi, try the website above, very helpful. by schlumpf Located in the center of the Old city part with a very beautifull terrace where to admire amazing views of the Gaths, Gange and the burning temple, the Puja Guesthouse is a very economical accomodation, appreciated by a lot of young people...Indeed it was very full during my stay.... I rented a basic double room with bathroom (no hot water, but it is definitely not necessary!) on the 3rd floor and it costed me only 100Rs!!! You must bargain also here, and it depends a lot on how many days you will stay here. The staff of the hotel is very cool, and you can hire them as a guide. One bad thing is that the owner will try to sell you silk stuff, but no worries, a “NO” with a great smile on the face is simply enough. I would raccomend this accomodation moreover for the location and the view then for the rooms, altrough are definitely acceptable.
