Flight time From London to Varanasi

by claireashp

Can someone please tell me approximatley what is the flight time from London to Varanasi?

Re: Flight time From London to Varanasi

You will probably need to fly London to Delhi or Mumbai first, which will take you around nine hours, after that it’s about an hour and a half to Varanasi, changing planes will take an hour at least, so with perfect timing you might possibly do take-off to touch down in around 12 hours, realistically likely to take you 14 hours plus.

Then there is getting through customs, security etc and getting to and from the airport etc so it’s quite a hike and realistically you’re might be looking at 20 hours.

If you google it any of the usual flight mongers should give you the schedules.

Travel Tips for Varanasi

The Ganga pollution

by josephescu

Along the same 7km river banks in Varanasi where 60.000 people perform daily their sacred and secular activities, 30 large sewers are continuously discharging into the river.
Hence, the river is so heavily polluted that the water is septic – no dissolved oxygen exists.
And the problem gets worse every year, despite efforts made by the authorities. To quote an example from the LP 2005 edition, faecal coliform bacteria per 100ml water exceed the safe ceiling by 30 times (1,5 million bacteria agains 0,5 million safe ceiling).

What is this?

This is something really special I saw in Varanasi in local peoples' house. This is actually a mail box built beside the door, so that postman can easily drop the mails into it. Probably in the other side has a box but I stood outside couldn't see anything.

The summer months can be hot and humid even climbing up into the mid 40C’s. Winter months can be the opposite and nights can get down to 5C. Monsoon time begins late June/early July where there are heavy downpours and often foggy mornings. Probably the best time to visit is from March to September. Certainly when I was there in March, the weather was quite pleasant, warm but not humid

Praying in the Gange

by schlumpf

During the trip with the boat on the Gange you will see a lot of people living, and doing a lot of things on the Gaths and on the Gange side.
The Gange is considered the mother and all the activities are developped on her side or in her.
From the sacral bath, to the puja (prays), to the clothes cleaning and so on...Is very beautifull see those people that are so deep with their cutoms and culture...

Ganesh: The Virtual son of Shiva and Parvati (Bis)

by Hmmmm

Why does Ganesh, who is obviously a person have a head of an elephant?

When Lord Shiva, was away fighting for the gods, the lady of the house, goddess Parvathi was alone at home. On one occasion, she needed someone to guard the house when she was going for a bath. Unable to think of an alternative, she used her powers to create a son, Ganesh. She instructed Ganesh to keep strict vigil on the entrance to the house and not to allow anyone into the house. Ganesh agreed and stayed on the strictest of strict vigils.

In the meantime Lord Shiva returned happy after a glorious victory for the gods, only to be stopped at the entrance by Ganesh. Ganesh, acting on Parvathi's orders verbatim, did not allow Shiva to enter the house. Lord Shiva became enraged beyond control and in a fit of rage slashed the head of Ganesh. Paravti came out from her bath and was aghast at the scene. She was very very angry at her lordship for what had happened and explained him the situation.

Lord Shiva wanted to make it up to Parvathi and agreed to put life back into Ganesha by putting the head of the first sleeping living creature that came in sight which was sleeping with its head to the north. He sent his soldiers to go in search of the creature. The first creature which came in sight was an elephant. So Lord Shiva re-created his son with the head of the elephant. Hence the trunk of Lord Ganesha. Parvathi was still not totally happy so Shiva granted Ganesha a boon that before beginning of any undertaking or task people would worship Lord Ganesh. Thus the reason for worship of Ganesha before start of any work.

You'll see many small shrines for Ganesh on road signs. All over India and even in Nepal too. Ganesh is a much loved divinity.
