by Ang2011

Hi again, anyone travelled from Delhi to Varanasi by bus -via Lucknow and any advice on which buses to take?Is it worth staying in Lucknow or passing thru is enough?

Hi

Whew its a very long bus trip from Delhi to Varanasi- 755km (would take you at least 20 or more hours)- and the buses are not very comfortable, especially on long trips.
They stop and start a lot, and get very crowded.
I have not been to Lucknow, but I believe that it was once long ago a beautiful city, which has unfortunately lost most of its charm.
Have a look at this website for info on getting to Varanasi from Delhi:

http://www.indiamike.com/india/india-travel-itinerary-advice-f91/best-way-from-delhi-to-varanasi-t12705/

I recommend going by train, which is a quick and comfortable (and very cheap) way to go.

I have a page on Varanasi with a lot of info.......click on my name for homepage, where there is a LINK for Varanasi (and New Delhi)

I agree with Lynne, take the train, only travel on a bus, if
there is no other option, as it is slow, uncomfortable and
dangerous...

Or take a plane, giving you more time to explore Varanasi (or Delhi).

Thx to all of you for advice-just that i am trying to book trains from home but it seems most of the fast trains from delhi to Varanai are booked for AC seats.that's why was considering bus option. have now booked a train from delhi to lucknow, where i want o stay for one day. then maybe whilst in delhi will try to find a seat on the train for Lucknow to Varanasi or might as well take the 8.5 hrs bus.

Travel Tips for Varanasi

Water buffalo

by illumina

The domestic water buffalo, prevalent almost everywhere in India, are omnipresent on the less populated ghats along the Ganges. Used for draft, dairy, and (at the end of their working lives) meat, their dung is also used for fuel.

During the heat of the day, you'll often spot the buff cooling off in the river water, and at night you'll probably bump into them wandering around the ghats!

The river in the early morning

by SirRichard

The river Ganges is definetly a main attraction in Varanasi. It’s a common scenary of daily life… and daily death. The best way to see it from a boat is before the sun rises. Then you can see how the city arises, people going for daily washing, preparing tea, praying… all at the huge stairways built at the shores.

Traffic policemen

by l_joo

The junction here were controlled by policemen each take turns to do the job. The chairs are for them to sit or rest. Probably traffic lights won't work in this city. There are too many cows, dogs, pigs and small individual vehicles going at different speeds, so maybe policemen are better way for them.

Islamic influences

by l_joo

Sorry for my ignorance, I thought Varanasi was a place full of Hinduism but surprised when I realized it had so many Arabian costumes on the street. These Arabic women dressed themselves in full black robe as shown in picture, they are inhabitants of the Hindu Holy city, very unexpected for me.

Temples

by Rupanworld

In most of Varanasi temples, one comes across lots of colours, thousands of bells hanging from the ceiling and it is regarded as auspicious to ring the bells while entering and while coming out from the temples. This picture shows a typical temple in Varanasi and all the bells at the entrance are quite visible here
