Water buffalo
by illumina
The domestic water buffalo, prevalent almost everywhere in India, are omnipresent on the less populated ghats along the Ganges. Used for draft, dairy, and (at the end of their working lives) meat, their dung is also used for fuel.
During the heat of the day, you'll often spot the buff cooling off in the river water, and at night you'll probably bump into them wandering around the ghats!
The river in the early morning
by SirRichard
The river Ganges is definetly a main attraction in Varanasi. It’s a common scenary of daily life… and daily death. The best way to see it from a boat is before the sun rises. Then you can see how the city arises, people going for daily washing, preparing tea, praying… all at the huge stairways built at the shores.
Traffic policemen
by l_joo
The junction here were controlled by policemen each take turns to do the job. The chairs are for them to sit or rest. Probably traffic lights won't work in this city. There are too many cows, dogs, pigs and small individual vehicles going at different speeds, so maybe policemen are better way for them.
Islamic influences

Sorry for my ignorance, I thought Varanasi was a place full of Hinduism but surprised when I realized it had so many Arabian costumes on the street. These Arabic women dressed themselves in full black robe as shown in picture, they are inhabitants of the Hindu Holy city, very unexpected for me.
Temples
by Rupanworld
In most of Varanasi temples, one comes across lots of colours, thousands of bells hanging from the ceiling and it is regarded as auspicious to ring the bells while entering and while coming out from the temples. This picture shows a typical temple in Varanasi and all the bells at the entrance are quite visible here
