Varanasi ....an enigmatic city
by ssakapal
Favourite thing about varanasi is the interplay of ghats as public spaces and the river ganga offcourse. i stayed for a week in varanasi, still it seems so insufficient. i feel to know the city even a month is not enough. i am an architect and travelled alone to varanasi. Its a safe city if one is careful and confident. i resided at Sahi River View Guesthouse. Its situated on Assi ghat facing the river ganges. i would recommend this guesthouse to any single female travelling to varanasi. Its a homely feeling at Sahi and its very helpful & geuine. thus one feels safe ans secure.
I will be back to varanasi for real detailed photography.
Street bathing
by l_joo
Street bathing is probably something pupolar in Varanasi, instead of Gangga bathing. The water here is pumped from the earth deep down there, so it wasn't holy water I guess. The temperature was cold that day, to bath is not easy, the boy is shivering and smiling the moment I saw him.
Crematorium
by l_joo
At first I thought to look at such thing was very difficult, but when I was there, I saw they did this endlessly and open to public. I walked here many times to look what they have and I saw some rich peoples performing some cremation rituals of pouring water into the dead people's mouth and while they do this, other peoples busy washing clothes less than 20 feet beside and goats waiting to eat the flowers which they had on the deap people, two peoples busy searching the river nearby this crematorium, for probably valuable stuffs. I put my digital camera close to my jacket partly hidden to snap all the photos.
Bathing in the Ganges
by illumina
The River Ganges, or Mama Ganga as it is frequently called, holds a very sacred position in the Hindu religion, and is associated with many myths and legends. It is believed that the river water has the power of washing away all one's sins, and so many Hindus come here to bathe in the water for that purpose. It is a large part of the morning puja, although you will see pilgrims washing in the river at all times of day.
We saw this man floating out into the river when we took our morning boat ride.
Please see warning tips for the downsides to washing in the river!
Varanasi: Holy Cow S..t
by Intrepidduck
India's sacred cow have alot of function other than religious importance. Not only do they provide the luxery of fresh milk, but their excrement is used as cooking fuel. Here in Varanasi like all over India one can wittness the drying of the dung. This is a smart fuel from time immomorial.
