Hotel Sahu: Best place right in the center

Like usual, we checked more than a dozen hotels in-person before settling on this one. Sahu is right in the center of the bustling town, and yet, once you are inside it is peaceful. And cool! In Kashi's heat and humidity, a cool lobby is a blessing in itself.

1. Air conditioned
2. Clean
3. In the center of all the action of Dasasvamedh Road and the city's namesake Kashi Vishvanath temple.
4. Usual stuff: room service, laundry, running hot water, etc.
5. Most reasonable charges for what it offered: Rs1,750 for 3 people in June.

Try reservations. They are pretty busy.

If you want a hotel away from it all, try Hotel Divya on Assi Ghat (542-2311305, 9415343132). However, getting to and from Assi Ghat to anywhere usually costs Rs70 each way, and it felt a little remote-without-a-point to me. They charge about Rs1,500 for 3.

Yogi Lodge: A great, clean, cheap and safe place

Before travelling to Varanasi, I was informed about Yogi Lodge by other travelers. As I was looking for a clean, cheap and safe place, I didn't hesitate to choose this hostel. My first impression wasn't very good, but soon I changed my mind when I found my room with windows facing the street.

This hostel is clean, according to Indian standards, well located and safe.
In spite of having a very small room, I found it clean with two windows facing the street.
The restaurant serves good meals for reasonable price, but menu is limited.

Shanti Guest House: Best place to stay close to the Ghats

Our arrival to Varanasi was eventful, as we did not had hotel reservation..
Good job I had LP guide to India.. there were few hotels/guest houses on offer and I cross-referenced them with TA and Hostelworld, and come up with Shanti Guest House.
And I am glad that we did.
It is nice old Indian house very close to the main burning Ghat- Manikarnika...
Although the Ghat is very close, you can not see it or smell it, just very beautiful vistas over the Ganges from the rooftop terrace...
We originally planed two nights but stayed 4...
Rooms are basic, clean and very brightly coloured, we had room with western style WC on the second floor. There are 4 floors and rooftop terrace...
Good restaurant on the terrace as well as internet caffee...
Our room cost Rs200 per night with ceiling fan, AC is extra, but we did not need it.

The hotel/guest house run free dawn & sundown boat rides on the Ganges, worth the effort to get up at 5am,
They also do free pick up from the train/bus station, you just need to let them know time & date.

Scindhia Guesthouse: Wonderful views over the Ganges

We arrived in Varanasi at the ungodly hour of 5.30am and struggled somewhat to find a place to stay, being plagued with touts all the way along the ghats. We asked at a few places only to find that most of them wouldn't have rooms available until after 12pm checkout. Eventually we found the Scindhia - and although the manager wasn't around to take a proper booking, the friendly doorkeeper told us we could leave our bags until he got there at 9am. We had a choice of a room with a balcony and bathroom for 900INR, or a room with window and shared bath for 350, so we took the later as 900 was quite a way over our budget! We were happy though as the window in our room gave us a majestic view out over the Ganges, absolutely perfect for watching the sunrise, morning puja and the boats.

Rien a redire.

La proximite des Ghats et la proximite des boutiques et de la vie indienne a Varanasi.

sai kripa hotel: alternative in varanasi

in terms of cheap accommodation in Indian conditions, it was the cleaniest place we stayed. the owner is a real talker and has a silk shop where he can just prison you. other than that and despite of its being a bit far from the main ghats I can absolutely recommend. he has some package programmes to see the ceremonies on Ganga etc. I think the one for Sarnath is very expensive (can hire a riksha for a much cheaper price) and the one for the sunset is needless. it is better to walk for the ritual in the evening. the one for the sunrise makes sense however after that he might drag you to his shop.

relatively clean and quite

Nearby the Ganges

For those who really want to explore the city of lights, staying at a hotel in the commercial area of Varanasi is certainly not in good taste. One should try to put up at a place as near as possible to the Ganges (possibly with a view of the Ganges from the terrace). In Varanasi, one finds thousands of households desiring to have a guest at their house in exchange for a rediculously small price. Many of these houses are no doubt very close to the Ganges and one can wake up looking at the ganges and retire to bed with a view of the holy river as well.

The best place to stay

During my visit to Varanasi, I had booked a room with a family residing at Meer Ghat. That was a typically Varanasi household, a joint family composed of the individual family of three brothers, one of them looking after the food aspect and the other looking after the tours of the guests putting up with them. As a result, we not only had very good, home cooked Varanasi food like aloo parathas, mooli paratha, chawal, achar, daal, chutney, sabzi etc. (and believe me, no question of food poisoning) but also had the best bargains while making the tours around the city. And to add to it all, we always had a tour guide with us, sometimes in the form of one of those brothers (helping us move around the entire city), sometimes their wives (when we went for shopping) and even sometimes their kids, when we went to the ghats for bath. And this 'Guide' part of the trip was entirely free, we paid nothing for it. It was their pleasure to accompany us while we explored their city.

From the terrace of this guest house, there's a great view of the Ganga. The house is almost 250 years old and is a heritage in itself.

For four day's stay (and fooding) for four persons we paid only Rupees 2200 (less than USD 48)

Scindia Guest House: Right on the banks of Ganges

If you would like to stay at a place right at the bank of the river Ganges with balcony overlooking the river (we insisted on it), it is an ideal place for you. It is a budget hotel, so don't count on any luxury. Our room cost 900.- Rs/night. It was an A/C room with acceptable bathroom, relatively clean, but there was no TV, fridge, phone, room service and other things you expect from a midrange place. Instead, there was a resident gecko in our room that did not disturb us and was really sweet.
In the guesthouse there is a cheap restaurant (open only for breakfast and dinner) where really delicious home-cooked food is served. Of course, beer is not available.
The guesthouse organizes regular boat tours on the Ganges (2x daily, sunrise and sunset, each 80.- Rs per person for the 2-hour-boat ride) and trips to the city (Benares Hindu University) and around Varanasi (Sarnath for 350.- Rs per person). Cheap internet access (Rs. 40.-/hour) is also available.
Pickup from the railway station is complimentary during the day (from 6 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon). You are encouraged to make the most of it, otherwise it is almost impossible to get to the place. In the old city streets are too narrow for even cycle rickshaws so you have to walk with your luggage (at least 500m.) A porter is highly advisable, for Rs. 40.- it is well worth it. They also organize airport dropoff (220.- Rs with autorickshaw for the 22 km.).
If you think about the location and price, it is very good value but can appear downright seedy for those who are used to living in midrange and top-end hotels, still I would recommend it.

View of the Ganges from the balcony was 100 times more exciting than watching TV.

Reshmi Guest House (Palace on the River): Nice Clean place

I picked this hotel based on the excellent internet reviews on tripadviser. The Hotel was very nice and clean with very nice views of the Ganges. The food at the Rooftop Dolphin restaurent was average.

The Owner and manager was a very nice person who went out of the way to be helpful.

The only bad side of the hotel was that they did not have an Elevator. I had some large bags that I had to carry up by myself as the hotel staff were out.

Right next to the River Ganges where you can see the life go by the whole day. Even the lamp lighting in the evening can be viewed right from your hotel room.

Yogi lodge: cheap and great to meet other travellers

I had heard good reports about this place before I got there. After a lot of trouble getting there (see tourist traps) I finally found yogi lodge.
I stayed in the dorm for 55 roepies a night. This was rather basic but good enough for me. They have squat toilets and showers with (sometimes ) hot water.
The staf is very friendly and they also have a laundry service;
You can also get food here which is very good but it can take a while before it's ready. (Like many restaurants in India)
Yogi lodge is also a great place to meet other travellers.

"Elvis Guesthouse": pleasant, basic accomodation near the ghats

checked into the "Elvis Guesthouse," where the owners (Sadie & Gautam) were very nice, she is a Swedish divorcee & he, a 35 year old Indian man.

the accomodation was reasonably priced, and though basic, very clean and comfortable. hot water abounded and the relaxing, chilled out atmosphere provided for a steady stream of travellers.

without a shadow of a doubt, the highlight of the 'elvis guesthouse,' was their resident-chef, NANDU. this delightful, honourable, truly special man - provided excellent, reasonably-priced meals at practically any hour of the day or night! the best discovery in all of varanisi!
