by lartelove

Hello,
What is the best way to get from Dehli to Darjeeling by train? How long does it take?
Thanks,
Eileen

My estimate would be at least 50 hours by train. Better way would be to fly from Delhi to Bagdogra, then Taxi/Jeep to Darjeeling (about 6 hours)

Flight is better and faster. But if you are interested by train. This is the best combination
1. Rajdhani Express from Delhi-Howrah (17-18 hours) and then
2.Express train from Howrah-Siliguri(New Jalpaiguri)-8-10 hours, eg Darjeeling mail.
3. Siliguri to darjeeling-Taxi

Travel Tips for Darjeeling

Dasai in detail.

by mantru

In October Hindus specially Nepali Hindus celebrate the most important festival of dasai or dashara or Durga puja.Goddess durgs is the presiding diety. Dashain is the longest and the most auspicious festival in the Nepalese annual calendar, celebrated by Nepalese of all caste and creed throughout the country .The fifteen days of celebration occurs during the bright lunar fortnight ending on the day of the full moon. This festaval is the one where you find all nepalies from all nooks and corner flying back home to be with their family. Its a kind of family get together where we go to meet all our relatives and obtain blessings fron elders.when we were kids this festivel was the best coz you get a new set of clothing and good food on Dashami or 10 th day, people dress in the finest ,dasara also starts the cleaning of houses, repainting houses ,limewashing so this time is the most hectic .In darjeeling schools and colleges are closed for the 9-10 days of festivities.

Dashain commemorates a great victory of the gods over the wicked demons. One of the victory stories told is the Ramayan, where the lord Ram after a big struggle slaughtered Ravana, the fiendish king of demons. It is said that lord Ram was successful in the battle only when goddess Durga was evoked. The main celebration glorifies the triumph of good over evil and is symbolized by goddess Durga slaying the terrible demon Mahisasur, who terrorised the earth in the guise of a brutal water buffalo. The first nine days signify the nine days of ferrous battle between goddess Durga and the demon Mahisasur. The tenth day is the day when

Himalayan Mountaineering Insitute

by traceyspacey

This is in the grounds of the zoological park. It provides training for India's leading mountaineers. Within the complex there is the Everest museum which traces the history of the attempts on the worlds highest mountain. It makes you really think of what has been achieved with so little equipment.

Next door is the Mountaineering Musuem, with a model of the world's mountains. In the UK our highest mountain is Ben Nevis, it looks so small compared to the others! Darjeeling is higher than
Ben Nevis.

Darjeeling, Lloyd Botanical Garden

by sachara

The garden (40 acres) was donated in 1878 for study of the Himalayan flora by Captain William Lloyd.

It's a quiet place just a few minutes out of the towncentre. Beautifull surrounding with trees and flowers. Many families visit this nice place. There are also some greenhousese with orchids and ferns.

ghum

Two kilometers from Darjeeling is the town of Ghoom which is the highest railway station in the world. It is situated at an altitude of 2,225.7 metres (7,407 feet). The place is the home of the Ghum Monastery and the Batasia Loop, a bend of the Darjeeling Himalayan railway.

"At home few days of relaxation"

I get to go home once a year during october which is the month of Dasara festival, which is the most impartant festival for the Nepalies people as we get blessings from elders. Most of the people living abroad or working, studing outstation return home this time of year. The festival is about the victory of good over evil as depicted in Ramayana where LOrd Rama returns after the victory over Ravana(the demon king who is believed to be more powerful then lord Rama)...so on this day we celebrate the victory and get blessings from elders wear new clothes, lots of goodies to eat. This is the time to meet family and friends we celebrate for 5 days where we go and meet all the relatives .Its fun to meet all your cousins, rebonding etc etc the pic above is my dad and me..i cant saw a lawn coz no grass however its a small area where i enjoy looking at the flowers relaxing under the darjeeling sun which has a effect to make you want to sleep under it......lots of plants around makes me feel happy and lightens my spirit........

"pumpkin"

Actually i love to pick anything that is growing in our vegetable garden this pic below is where i am holding a pumpkin,My mother had left in the garden after it was ripe for me to pick it....this was in oct 2006 when i went home for Dasara.Lots of greenery its really a treat after sweating out in the city......love those short moments i spend at HOME.

"Town"

This pic is my cousin and me returning after visiting my Grandmother(maternal)this place is the main market bit wet after the rains....

"Observatory hill"

THe pic is from the observatory hill or commonly known as Mahakal mandir as there is a temple where Buddhism and Hinduism coexists. Its a mandir however you can see the buddhist prayer flags around the place...lots of monkeys around so be careful with the prasad they will snatch it from you...nice place to visit early in the morning when the sun is rising as there will be pandits in the early hours(5-9 am )

me at home my brother was practising photography and i am the lucky model.

My flowers, all of them give me joy this is double agelea pink looks beautiful

Dont you like this chrysanthimum, dont know the ciorrect spelling so forgive me....during october when i go home the flowers will be on full bloom....i love to look at them each morning.....they really make you smile ...especially if you have seen them grow the first bloom gives you so much joy....
