The Astoria is one of the more expensive hotels on Sudder Street and it makes a good choice for the first night since you can check in at any time and the planes from europe usually arrive at the smalll hours. There's nothing much to say about the hotel really as its characterless. Its convenient, has a/c, a tv, bed , fridge so I guess you don't really need any more. If you do there are many better hotels but then you have to pay more.
The hotel is located on Sudder street which is the Calcutta version of Koh San Road so everyone speaks english and there are more street dwellers than average. There's loads of shopping locally though so its quite a convenient location.

Having retired I would like to spend winters in Calcutta and am looking for a furnished apartment rental from December 2008 through April 2009 in central city.
well friend where are u from exactly well I wll try to find some place for u...so wat is ur budget....
Ashish,
Thank you for responding to me - I unfortunately did not check my mail in time. I took a large flat on Bishop's Court Road just across from Hastings House and was very comfortable. It cost Rs15,000 per month - everything included. What I didn't like was the lack of services in Alipore - restaurants for example - and the metro travel to central city. I was there 2 months. Next time I'll look in Entally - I would like to know that neighborhood better. Check my restaurant suggestions in Calcutta - and give me some of your own. I love your town.

There is the magnificient Darjeeling about 12-14 hrs drive from calcutta.
Great views of the Himalayas.
Several Trek routes are there within this area.
There are several good locations where camping can be done.
Also there are Log huts made by the forest Dept. and also the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council - DGHC.
The taxis from Kolkata Intl. airport to downtown costs 400 Rupies (9 USD) at a fixed rate. You pay for a voucher at the taxi stall inside the airport hall, and then walk out to the taxi lane. I have heard that Indian people can arrange taxis without a voucher for half the price.
Anyway, I don't think 400 Rupies for a 30-40 minutes drive is a rip off. And you don't have to discuss and bargain the price in a place loaded with people.
One car takes 4 passengers and a 25 kg bag for each one. Extra bag costs 1 Rs pr. kg
For more info see the receipt from Bengal taxi (the last picture).
(Indian money comes in Rs500, Rs100, Rs50, Rs20, Rs10, Rs5, Rs2 and Rs1).
Great ambience, simply fabulous food ranging from the delightful Chicken Stroganhoff to the good old club sandwich. Chicken Stroganhoff is my favourite. You can even check out their sandwiches! They are truly appetizing!
A good typical chinese food joint where you can have a sumptous meal with your family for a very reasonable price. The decor may not be called excellent but what you need in this hot summer is a good air conditioner. That's what Kafulok gives you. The service is good.Though it is not located on the main road yet lovers of authentic chinese food frequent this place as they get the real taste of China at an affordable rate.
We visited this place on three consecutive Sunday evening starting from April 22 nd. We have tried many dishes and all the dishes are very well made. Last Sunday we tried Chicken Vegetable Mushroom stir fried, Gravy Hakka Chowmin, Pepper Chicken, Chicken Wanton Soup, Black Lebel Beer & Ice Cream. I must say we liked Chicken Vegetable Mushroom stir Fried most and it was an excellently prepared dish.
What I understand that all these Chinese joints of Tangra make the food to suit our Indian palate. But they can make the food as per Chinese Mainland if you prefer. But you will have to specify. A great experience indeed.
Please let your preference be known to Mr. H.Y.Chen or the owner Richard before hand.
