ART GALLERY CUM GUEST HOUSE!

This quaint little guest-house, tucked away in a side street in South Kolkata, has so much potential. The rooms are tastefully decorated and clean. It is residence that has been converted into what is a confusing mixture of accomodation and an art-gallery. The whole of the ground floor has walls lined with Indian art (for sale), and even on the 3 upper floors and outside sitting area, there are paintings and sculptures. This is eye-catching, and aesthetically attractive.
Unfortunately, the owner of Bodhi Tree, Devdan, keeps himself hidden on the top-floor, and we could only speak with him "by appointment". He leaves the day to day running of the place to an "office manager", who, although a pleasant young fellow who tries his best, has minimal English. Communication was very difficult. The rest of the staff were as helpful as they could be. under the circumstances. I really feel that Bodhi Tree needs a more "hands-on" approach. by the owner.
The bathrooms have a hot water system that is so complicated that one needs to be a genius to work it out- we could never get more that a few minutes of hot water from the shower at any given time (even after MANY complaints & queries, and demos from the staff) It was just NOT working for us-in any room! It became a bit of a joke after a while.
Breakfasts are served- out of sequence- (everything came at once) but I did mention this to Devdan, the owner- and it was corrected. The food was basic but adequate.
The little outdoor sitting area downstairs is blissfully peaceful- we ate out breakfast there, and it was a good place to sit and read.
The staff were helpful in ordering taxis for us, although we also used the nearby underground Metro system to get to Esplanade & Park Street areas.
All in all, I would say that this is not bad choice for accomodation in Kolkata- if one could be VERY patient, and overlook the frustrations of lack of hot-water & accessability to the owner, who could really improve the problems that occured, almost daily. It is not managed on a professional basis.
I also think that the website for Bodhi Tree is slightly misleading regarding size and amount of rooms available. I would stay here again.

Rooms all have different themes- (avoid Yoga Cara- it is for Dwarfs only)
