River Cruise on The Ganges.

by goutammitra

On every Saturday/Sunday and on other Holidays West Bengal Tourism Corpn. organises River Cruise on the Ganges with Musical sortie. Well it is primarily a joy ride kind of thing for about one hour cruise. They allow soft drink, tea / coffee and very good music on board. There is a live band belts out popular Indian numbers. They also invite the guests to dance and sing with them. It is quite relaxing and enjoyable program, for about an hour. They take you from Millenium Park , Fairly Place Jetty to about Khidderpore Dockyard and back. The fare is very cheap Rs. 50/- per head, as compared to same type of program in Goa for Rs.150/- ( US$3) . Hard drink is not allowed as this is sponsored by the local Marxist govt.
programwise, this is much behind what you get to see in Goa, They show you folk dance of Goa and it runs daily. May be someday they will make their program better. But today the singers are much better than that of Goa singers.

Taxi to Sudder Street

by illumina

Once out of Howrah Station, we took a taxi to Sudder Street. Make sure you go to the pre-paid booth just outside, the price is much lower than that quoted at first by the taxi-drivers. We paid about 65 rupees.

For getting around elsewhere, just go up to taxis stopped on the street, or hail one - a good place for that is anywhere on Jawaharlal Nehru Road. Ask the price before you get in, if you don't like it, go to another taxi! The taxis waiting for tourists on Sudder Street will quote far more expensively than ones stopped on Jawaharlal Nehru.

Horse-drawn carriages

by Rupanworld

Horse drawn carriages are still found in many touristy areas of Kolkata, especially the Chowringhee area, covering the Victoria Memorial, the Maidan, Indian Museum, etc. I have never taken one, but have seen people enjoying on board on many occasions.

Try Their Parantha & Mutton Curry!

by goutammitra about Chacha's Hotel at Bidhan Sarani( College Street)

Those who know about Kolkata City will surely agree that this hotel used to a landmark in Bengali life of North Kolkata! Started as humble roadside dhaba ( simple eatery where ethnic food is served) in 1875 by great grandfather of Mr.Bishwanath Patro, an Oriya businessman, for the Taxi Drivers of North Kolkata, soon earned fame among Bengali gentlemen that this place provides excellent food, Mutton cooked in Punjabi style with paratha. It became very famous that many aristocrats, Theatre personalities, Movie stars, Doctors, and students started getting their meals from there.
The hotel was just a shanty and located just next to the paternal house of Swami Vivekananda ( the famous sage/ saint of India). It was shifted in front of Swami Vivekananda's house to fix a statue of Swami next to their house after 20 years of long request from Ramkrishna Mission.(see picture). It was rebuilt with aircondition facility and fancy chairs. I too have tasted their food many times in my child hood. It now has completed 136 years of it's existence! Bravo! and qudos to our bengali palate, this is going to continue in years to come. Now they have made it multi cuisine restaurant but the old favourite remains the same. It is Mutton Curry and Parantha ( See picture)
